Researchers Link Early Stem Cell Mutation To Autism (BioresearchOnline)
La Jolla, CA - In a breakthrough scientific study published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists at the Burnham Institute for Medical Research have shown that neural stem cell development may be linked to Autism. The study demonstrated that mice lacking the myocyte enhancer factor 2C (MEF2C) protein in neural stem cells had smaller brains, fewer nerve cells and showed behaviors similar to those seen in humans with a form of autism known as Rett Syndrome.
This work represents the first direct link between a developmental disorder of neural stem cells and the subsequent onset of autism.
The research team was led by Stuart A. Lipton, M.D., Ph.D., a clinical neurologist and Professor and Director of the Del E. Webb Neuroscience, Aging and Stem Cell Research Center at Burnham.

The worlds's largest grant machine, world shaking Science, if the factor that causes stem cells to become neurons, is missing, willfully destroyed, they still become neurons, but to a lesser degree.
I have only heard of Rett Syndrome, but what I hear of autism, larger heads, brains, and an onset at two or three, which seems to rule out Genetics and Neurology. Both would be present from day one. That might be the case with Rett.
Is Rett Autism?
I have doubts that Autism, Asperger's, and HFA are the same thing.
The proof is lacking, which would be increasing factor 2C (MEF2C) and see if you get HFA rats.
Perhaps they should try for a Department of Energy grant, Stem Cells improve gas milage.
There does seem to be a shortage of active Neurons. Big Science seems to produce little. |

Not at all. There are genetic diseases that become manifest at any age, but they are clearly genetic. And neurology or neurological development could start out normal, and then at some stage of development, other genes switch on, and the disease develops. |
