Growing up in Elementary school I walked different ( I still do and physical therapy hasn't helped mainly because I lack the motivation.) Please don't laugh but if I had to describe it it'd be kind of like a penguin. left foot out and right foot out not straight together. When I do X-rays,MRI tests (for other issues example my knee injury last year) I had to have one foot to the left or right it kind of hurts to have them straight and if I try walking straight it has to be a conscuous decision as in I HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IT. I was just curious. Thanks WP. (I had my pelvic bone broke as a baby and have no middle part (I'm a woman and to make it easy to understand thank of your pelvic as an upside down A well that middle "line"/bone I do not have so it's a V. (Thankfully I can still walk which is why I chose not TO HAVE A SURGERY WHICH WOULD REBREAK MY PELVIC BONE!!!! |

My mother made me walk around the house with a book on my head to correct my gait and posture when I was a girl. That was okay, though, it was kind of fun to see how long I could hold it up. My neice was just a few years younger than me and we would walk around dropping books all over the place together.
As a teenager, my sister-in-law once told me I walked like a giraffe, so I enrolled in a short after-school program that taught "modeling." Basically, how to walk and sit like a lady and how to wear makeup, although I don't remember us actually getting to that lesson. I still don't have the most graceful gait, but it did help some.

Was told well into my twenties that I walked like a five year old. My arms rarely swung during junior high school, and I preferred to run toe-heel instead of heel-toe.

| Prior to my DX on 4/9/08 I picked my Mothers brain as discretely as I could to remember why I had special shoes when I was real little ( before going to school ). It turns out that the shoes were to correct me being pigeon toed. I always remembered something was wrong but could not remember what. If schools had been better qt picking up on stuff when I was little then I would probably have not been able to go into the Military. Not being able to do that thing right would have left me more of a mess. |

I used to walk on just my heels when I was a kid. Mum swore up and down I was going to fall and break my neck.
And then when I was 16, I had to have surgery on my right leg cause the right foot pointed out 70-75 degrees but the knee was straight. Nothing to do with AS though, unless you count my dad abusing me cause I had it. _________________ The two loudest sounds in the world are a click when you should hear a bang, and a bang when you should hear a click.

| not that i know of. but when i was about 2 or 3 my great-grandmother commented how i walked just like her dad. i wonder what she meant by that, but there must have been something distinct about my walk. |

THANKS for reminding me! I had special orthopedic inserts when I was like 5-7! I DID walk a bit odd. Anyway, I don't remember the REASON for the inserts, but I had them. |

I used to walk on the balls of my feet, as a child, instead of heel-ball-heel-ball. My feet also pointed out, as well. _________________ Sid The Rat is everything that I stand for. Yes I did. I walked with my butt out and instead of in and my back wasn't in, it was out a little. I dunno if I still walk like that. I can remember my mother fixing my posture and telling me that's how you walk and stand and it just felt weird to stand like that. _________________ http://www.factcheck.org/

As a kid I tended to trip over my feet and fall a lot. Every now and then I still stumble for no apparent reason. Also used to do some toe-walking, but not all the time. (still do it sometimes, if the floor is cold) My feet point outward a bit, only 30-45 degrees, but I don't know if that's abnormal.
When I go by a mirrored building I can tell there's an abnormal character to how I walk, but I'm not sure exactly how. Sort of "wooden," I guess; not a lot of upper body movement. |

I remember my mom saying that I walked like a "nazi trooper"...(stiff legs) and needed to learn to bend my knees. It made me very self conscious and worried that kids would make fun of me, but they never did to my face.
I have a lot of problem with staying "aligned" and hate standing or sitting straight....it hurts. I wonder if it is because of "mild scoliosis" ? Anyone else (in school during the 70's), recall health professionals calling all the kids to the gym for their yearly scoliosis test ? What was that about? _________________ Just because one plane is flying out of formation, doesnt mean the formation is on course....R.D.Lang

Scoliosis is a physical disorder, also called curvature of the spine. The spine is curved more deeply or in a different way than is normal and causes problems with normal mobility or even with organ function. My sister-in-law had a pretty severe case that eventually required surgery; her pregnancy was extremely painful because of it. She ended up having the surgery because it was endangering her heart in some way. If it's caught in childhood, scoliosis is usually treatable with a period of time with a back-brace and physical therapy. I knew a girl in elementary school who wore one for a time.

wasn't so bad, but my walking isn't normal. I used to walk on tiptoes a lot, but not all the time. When I was walking once, my Mum told me: "that's not how you walk" and showed me, and I wasn't so bad after that. I was about 4 years old. I can't remember what she told me to do but whatever it was, I did it.
I still bounce a bit when I walk, and I am a bit ridgid. My friends always used to comment on how my arms appeared to hand down a bit and my legs harldy bend at all. I tend to look down at the floor when I walk. |

Thankss for the info. I do know what it is, I was DXed with a very mild form of it in 7th grade......but what I was asking was....was there a reason that they were doing it in the 70's (because fewer kids had their own DRs to DX it or if there was an epidemic of it.) Do they still do it in schools now or was it just a 70's "thing" ?
Anyone else DXed with it and does it effect the way you walk? _________________ Just because one plane is flying out of formation, doesnt mean the formation is on course....R.D.Lang
