Hi, I'm wondering if there's any free e-mail account I can use to back up large program files on my lap top. I plan to attach the files and save them as drafts.

I don't want to spend money burning them to dvds nor do I want to use system restore or anything else that is too complicated to use.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey,

If you have firefox, you can install the Gspace plugin and store them in a Gmail account - with folder access and everything.

Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo webmail will give you at least 5 GB of email storage each. There is usually a limit on the size of the attachments though. You can get around this by using something like 7-zip (or jZip if you prefer) to encrypt, compress and split and an archive into volumes small enough to attach. (jZip is just the 7-zip engine with a prettier interface.)

You don't need Firefox to have Gspace-like functionality. Gmail Drive Shell Extension does basically the same thing but doesn't even use you browser. It's integrated directly into windows: http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm
GDSE and Gspace are a lot more convenient than zipping and attaching everything yourself, but of course this isn't what gmail is for, so it isn't sanctioned by Google, and therefore it could theoretically stop working at any time if Google decides to change something. That means your data is safer if you do it yourself.

Last I checked, http://mozy.com/ offers 2 GB backup for free accounts. If all you need to backup are small documents that change often, 2 GB is plenty. There are numerous services like this that offer a small amount of storage for their free accounts.

You can use certain file sharing sites to temporarily store large files http://todaysbestofbreed.wordpress.com/2007/09/19/dont-forage-terrabytes-of-free-storage-online/ These may not be reliable enough for backups though.

If you really need a lot of reliable space online, you could just rent your own webserver. They could easily offer hundreds of gigabytes of storage online for less than $10 per month. The space is supposed to be for your websites, but there's no rule that says you have to make them public. You could just store everything on a hidden folder and not even create the website.

Or you could do what I do and get an external hard drive. You can just save the installers on there.

Works well, cause if windoze goes kaput, then you can reinstall and get every programme back.
