about autism.
I don't consider myself higher functioning than anyone else on the board, because I don't know them. And also because sure, I can talk more than a lot of people, and talk to a lot of people, but the others aren't any less functioning, they're just into either their problems or their obsessions. When you have an obsession, you get skills, talents and knowledge. I'm dumber than most people on this board when it comes to anything but social stuff. Because the AS/PDD-NOS community is my obsession. Most people on this board have skills, talents and knowledge I'll never have. _________________ God protects fools. Be a fool.

| First of all, human beings are animals. No animal would participate in behavior that isn't conducive to its survival or well being. We as humans (which includes us Aspies) engage in negative thinking, self bashing, etc. A lot of us also suffer from poor self-esteem and in general a poor self image. If this type of behavior doesn't help us to adapt or survive, it must be considered insane thinking. |

But our souls need to survive too, and sometimes that means taking risks and losing limbs.
The only people I'm totally comfortable around are socially impaired people. _________________ God protects fools. Be a fool.

I tend to get more obsessed when I am stressed out about something. My answer to stress is to just study stuff. Studying, or, "obsessing" does make you smarter.
I think in school what I did was learn without paying attention because I was a really lousy student but not because I wasn't capable. But still I managed to learn without even thinking I was learning it's the only way to explain what I am now.
I think you are a lot smarter than you realize. |

I think every aspie is faced with decisions that will lead to one of three outcomes:
a) Abandon the need for social interaction, and become a hermit totally immersed in your obsessions.
This would logically lead to the greatest potential for happiness, if we are truly able to abandon that need. I do not believe this is possible however, because I think the need for social connection is ingrained in the human psyche.
b) Abandon any attachment to self identity, and conform in order to fit the shallow, superficial definitions of "socially acceptable" in society at large.
This would lead to the greatest sense of social acceptance, but it would be an extremely hollow victory because it would not be the real you that was accepted, and it would be exhausting to maintain the act lest you get discovered as the fake you would be.
c) Continued to be yourself, spend enough time on your obsessions to maintain the sense of fullfillment that comes from them, but do not abandon social needs entirely. Instead meet them by deliberately seeking out others, aspie or NT, who are not locked into shallow, superficial interests and either share some of your interests, or have their own and can appreciate your passions for yours, even if they do not share them.
This is the balanced, compromise approach that I think will lead to the greatest sense of fullfillment, and the one I personally subscribe to.

I hate it when my mother says I have AS. I don't have AS. Maybe I am AS, but I don't have it. It's not something I got. My issues with her that she blames on my AS, however, are something I got, so don't get confused. _________________ God protects fools. Be a fool.

Dopamine not only gives the feeling of pleasure, it also helps brain think faster and better. If we see joy from an evolutionary standpoint, it's the concrete ability to live well in the world. The more pleasure experienced, the better a person lives because of a brain in a good shape. It's a good example of intelligent design.
Now, what is the place of intelligence in all this? Intelligence (I talk about scientific intelligence) requires a lot of knowledge, and thus gray matter, contraposed to white matter that act like highways for thoughts. Intelligence is fat, not muscles.
The more things one person knows, the more his brain will be slower. Since speed of thought is happyness, slowness of thought is an impending source of unhappyness. This is a toll that further aggravates unfavorable personal situations.
This is why intelligent people are more prone to be depressed. |
