|
|
For the past two years or so, I have experienced, once every few months, breathing difficulties. I suddenly couldn't breathe. It felt like there was a wavy motion in the walls of my oesophagus. My breathing first became raucous, then breathing became impossible and, in one instance, I felt the walls of the oesophagus (or of the bit that's above it) touching one another. In all instances I felt like vomiting too. Some food I had eaten was coming up (typically rice, porridge or bread), but it never came up all the way and I never actually vomited. The whole incidents felt panicky, and I had my finger on the telephone ready to call the emergency services. Fortunately, I always recovered my breathing and never actually had to ask for help. After I had recovered my breathing, I had to spit a lot.
Now I would like to go and see a doctor about it, because it keeps happening. I am concerned however, that it might be a rare disease linked to Asperger's, and that the doctor might not be familiar with it.
Hence I am asking: does anybody here recognize the symptoms? |

I have no medical experience to be honest but I recommend going to a doctor to find out. _________________ Each person gets his or her own freedom and passion one by one

| I never heard of a rare breathing disease that is linked to Aspergers. But I have had those symptoms occasionally when stressed out or ill. Except for the feeling of the walls of the oesophagus touching. I had those symptoms rarely in compariaon to what you are describing. Are you stressed out whenever it happens (from something other than not being able to breathe I mean? I do not know what you have but I would check with a doctor and address your concerns. |

Could it be the a panic attack or esophageal reflex ? My panic attacks involve a release of adrenalin that might make you nausea's, though for me they usually come with blurred vision, cloudy thinking, increased heart rate and breathing. It might effect other people in other ways.
I know when I am nausea's, I do have an increase in "spit"...it usually proceeds the feeling and makes me spit. Perhaps you need to throw-up but your system is not causing enough contractions to make it happen and it is getting caught in your esophages...that certainly would feel like you couldn't breath.
Does sound like something worth checking out with your DR. Long term acid reflex is easy to treat through change in diet and some medications and Should be treated because it can lead to permanent scarring in your throat and possible cancer. I don't think it is directly related to AS but perhaps anxiety that goes along with it for many of us. Might want to rule out food allergies as well. I know I stopped getting as bad of reflux when I stopped consuming diet soda. _________________ Just because one plane is flying out of formation, doesnt mean the formation is on course....R.D.Lang

Your airways probably closed to prevent stomach digestive juices from entering them (hence the spitting). Definitely see a Dr., but also try one of those over the counter antacid/ ulcer meds as directed until your appointment. Tell him about any illnesses in the past 6 mo or so and if you have moved. Look around your environment for sprayers (companies that spray pesticide, herbicide or fertilizers), mold, old appliances and fixtures, etc. Mostly will be safe, but one may be the cause, especially if this is associated with any other symptoms like tremors, muscle weakness, loss of mental ability, racing heart, inability to control body temp, etc.
Sleep on your left side also. Your stomach is on your left side and your esophagus will be higher rather than lower than your stomach.

However, the most likely reason is similar to what happened to me. You just don't realize how hard you are pushing yourself and you need a break. |

Thanks to all who have replied.
I won't be surprised if the problems are caused by stress. Indeed, I do push myself very hard and I don't always realize I'm doing too much. The problem is, you can't get a break in this society where nobody understands Asperger's and where you're stuck in unsuitable jobs, which you have to go to every day no matter how stressful.
I'll go and see a doctor anyway. Let's hope that the problem will be diagnosed correctly. |
