Does anyone here do martial arts? If so what kinds? I'm considering it, but don't know how suited I am to even try. My coordination's not that horrible, but my patience is zero. Also, I tent to be pretty reactive (do not sneak up on me), and I'm not sure making my reactions potentially deadlier is a good idea.
No, I have no idea what form might interest me, suggestions welcome. Just not the "useless" kinds like tae bo please.

So, aspies and martial arts... do they mix?

I'm a blue belt in Brazilian Jiujitsu. Though I haven't trained in five years, (since I got pregnant with my first child). Of course, I didn't even know about AS until a couple months ago, but I suppose I really enjoyed the deep pressure. BJJ is wrestling, there is no kicking or punching, so your reactivity level isn't going to hurt anyone. I had also taught this art to kids for years. I have had three Aspie students, and I know it improved their proprioception...and my own. ( Rolling Eyes @ myself for being dense and never realizing I had AS until now)

I've always wanted to try it, but always though I wouldn't be any good at it, since my coordination's so bad. I could barely do Tae Bo in gym class Rolling Eyes

I recommend Aikido, it is a generally non-violent martial art so your reactions would not harm people unless they are attacking you. It is also one of the most effective martial arts in practice, but it takes years to become effective.

People have all sorts of opinions about martial arts, but in practice it works. Bruce Lee recognized that Aikido was effective and incorporated some of it's principals into his martial art, most importantly the element of deflection which is based on the fact that it requires less energy to deflect your opponents momentum then to resist it.

my son is in Tae Kwon Do and he loves it. it is an adaptive class but they are still responsible for learning the same patterns and kicks and doing the same breaks as the "normal" classes. they are allowed a little more leeway for their behavior in this class; outbursts are better tolerated. we love how his self control and self confidence have increased. he looks forward to going to every class. he has also made friends in the class and that is so great for him.

Wow, there's a lot more variation between the types than I thought. I guess I need to try to figure out what would best suit me, with what little knowledge I have.
Thanks for the link JerryHatake, I'm reading it now....

Well let's see.... I'm not interested in doing tournaments, breaking boards, and would rather not get really beat up. I looked, all our local schools are labeled either karate or taekwondo, but probably offer other types as well. I may have to just go look some, see what looks interesting.
And see how much this sort of thing costs, because I have issuse about spending much money.

I to Taiji (the proper spelling of Tai Chi). It isn't all about relaxation and crap. It is real fighting. I have learned hand to hand combat as well as how to use a weapon. Oh, my avatar is a animated picture of a character I came up with in Taiji clothes with my weapon of choice, the staff.

I want to start on kung-fu. It's awesome. Being autistic doesn't get in my way usually.

Imitating can be a problem. If the training is based on fast and mindless imitation only, it's a problem for me because of autism.

If it allows free learning, understanding the move myself etc. I do better than other people.

that's not true at all. most aikido styles do suck though.

i do grappling: informally
judo a few yrs: not tested (went mainly for grappling anyway)
and aikido... (not the namby pamby kind): 2nd blackbelt
also do hakutsuru... my last rank was green... but we never really tested... sensei was oldschool, kinda

I have a black belt in choi kwang do Smile and a brown belt in karate. Martial Arts are fun but it takes several years to get a black belt - not good if you dont have any patience Sad
