Hi-

I have been busting my butt with Voc Rehab for 2 years. It is not going too well- called freakish, etc- the usual tormet we go through.

My question is: Do any of you PREFER to work?

I am on disabilty without any expectation of recovery, but I WANT to work and have a normal life.

Would you prefer to work or not work?

Is it worth it to go through Voc Rehab? Or am I cutting my own throat? If I go to work health care is in jeopardy, etc. You know the drill in America- pre-existing=no coverage but Medicare, go to work, lose Medicare......but must be poor to get Medicare/Medicaid.......

Has anyone found it better to go to work or did it mess things up and send you spiraling back into total sucidal despair (No, I am not suicidal)......?

I prefer to work. It does not depress me. It gives me a sense of accomplishment.

I would prefer getting paid to work on my obsessions but that isn't possible. I would prefer not working but whould hate to have to live on the little bit of money you get on disability...I have two sisters on disability, not for AS, and they really suffer trying to get by money wise. I deally, I would work part time and have more time for my interests but enough money to live on and still afford a good computer, crafts supplies and broadband internet connection.

What are you doing at vocational rehab...I don't know much about it.

I get free health care (SSI) and have some savings from the job I recently got fired from, so in my case why bother working. The need for some structure and I'm not always going to be young and in relatively good health.

It's conflicting still, I don't know if this is your case but with me people and interpersonal situations are absolutely impossible to deal with.

It took me over two years after applying to vocational rehab before I even landed my previous job, though almost half that time I was on a waiting list. Don't really want to go back to that.

I'm a bit more tormented.

I've been going to voc rehab job counseling since August but I don't get much at all in terms of assistance (monthly psych appointments and now basic counseling b/c I'm a lil suicidal). My dad is going to stop pay for my car insurance soon, so I'm a bit worried for reasons other than being screamed at all the time.

I've had one job interview that was pretty pointless, as the guy was not informed properly of my problems. Both my BA and MA are in fields unrelated to my more obsessive interests.

I think it's very rude for people to scream at you. It's not as if you purposely are not working.

I would prefer never to "work" again the rest of my life...if by "work" you mean doing a job for a boss.
I am not averse to actual toil - I put enormous efforts into my artwork - it's being told what to do that rankles like poison.
As a creative person I have more interests and things to do than I have time or money for, and I derive all sense of accomplishment from progress in these areas. I take no pride in "being employed" - in fact, quite the reverse. I am always ashamed to be someone else's wage slave, no matter what NTs believe to the contrary.

I'd far prefer to work if I liked my job. I currently don't, so daydream about being umemployed, although I've been unemployed and don't like the poverty, being on the dole and the boredom. Working gives you purpose which can keep you from feeling depressed and/or bad about yourself. BUT if the job is the wrong one, like mine, I'm every bit as depressed now as I was when I was unemployed.
