Jeyradan: This is Michaela.
JasonWilkes: And this is Jason. On May 8th 2008, I posted this in the General Autism Discussion section of this website.
Jeyradan: What Jason wrote struck a chord with me, and so I answered his post with more care (though it doesn't seem like it) and more openness than I usually use.
JasonWilkes: The chord-strikery was mutual, and upon reading her response, I immediately private messaged her. What ensued was a cavalcade of messages. However, in one of the first messages, I was infinitely disappointed to learn that we lived 2,289 miles apart.
Jeyradan: Which circumstance was certainly infuriating, given that we were getting along so well based purely on WrongPlanet messaging... and yet, didn't stop or even slow the rate at which we were exchanging messages. The style of messaging we were using quickly became insufficient, and thus we expanded to e-mail, instant messaging...
JasonWilkes: ... and, soon enough, meeting for coffee via webcam.
Jeyradan: In a little over a month's time, we had amassed well over four hundred pages of correspondence.
JasonWilkes: Autistic much? Gwahahah! I was (am) in upstate New York as part of a Mathematics Research Internship at SUNY Potsdam. On Friday June 20th, 2008, Michaela and I split the cost of a plane ticket - flying her over 2,400 miles from Alberta to Ottawa for the express purpose of hangy-outy-dorkification.
Jeyradan: Spend over seven hundred dollars? On a plane ticket to fly across the continent? To meet a guy from the Internet?
JasonWilkes: Why the hell not?
Jeyradan: And against everything you've ever heard, everything your mother ever told you not to do, everything your common sense strives against... it was the best decision I've ever made.
JasonWilkes: The original plane tickets allowed for a 3-day trip. Friday through Sunday.
Jeyradan: It took us another few days at the most to realize that that didn't suit us well enough... so we just extended the trip by another week. Before even having met one another in person. Yep.
JasonWilkes: Hi-five?
Jeyradan: (slap!)
JasonWilkes: (slap!)
Jeyradan: So here we are! This very moment, we are hanging out in an abandoned part of a dormitory at SUNY Potsdam...
JasonWilkes: Making a dual-post on our original meeting-site. Viva unprovoked private messages!!!

Thanks, that made me laugh.
High five!
Hope you two enjoy your time together. Despite what other people say, relationships that start over the internet are usually deeper then those made at the bar. |

Thanks for all the responses yous guys. The trip officially ended today, but it was super fundorktastic all across the board.
P.S. 5th element: You've been to Potsdam NY?? That's a huge coincidence, considering that the population is hardly more than 5 people and a barn. _________________ "People who see life as anything more than pure entertainment are missing the point."

I liked the original thread. Realizing that it has had such a nice outcome for the two of you is even better. I hope things continue to go well with the two of you. |
