I'm getting my wisdom teeth removed soon and I had to talk with the dentist about what not to do before and after the procedure...mid sentence he starts talking about how any day now we are going to find sentient life in underground structures on mars. Should I really allow myself to be rendered unconscious and placed in this man's care for 45 minutes with sharp teeth scooper things?

I had an insane dentist also, he was addicted to the nitrous oxide, he lost his license because of malpractice.
My dentist is not using any anesthesia either which made me pause. It looks like he's giving me some uber-drug cocktail to drug me into oblivion. I'm getting benzos, nitrous oxide and some type of opioid to "dull" things as he put it. Should be a interesting experience to say the least.
Have often thought that its something special about dentists..
I try to imagine to one day wake up and think ""now i know what i want
to do the rest of my life, i want to be elbow-deep in other peoples spit,
blood and teeth every day while they squirm under me in pain.. seems
odd in a way, when i think of it like that
I had an interesting dentist incident. I had to have my wisdom teeth taken out surgically, all 4. I had a really nice dentist - I liked him. He was then already retired but had chosen to donate his services abroad during our Alaskan wintertime - admirable. In the summer he just worked on weekends. He was relatively old, in his 70s but quite active. Anyway, he did my oral surgery. I am/was poor, being a student. Beforehand he said I could make monthly payments (12 payments total) and this was fine. I pay all my bills. He did a good job with my oral surgery.
Six weeks after my surgery he died. I paid those 12 payments as agreed. But.....I've never written a check to a dead man! Btw, HOW are those endorsed? I suppose his estate (ie: widow, family)? Rather creepy, yes? _________________ same nightmare, different nap
Had a "uncomfortabel" trip to a dentist some years ago. My girlfriend
at the time had problems with some teeth and made an appointment
(at a dentist we had never been to before) to get them pulled.
When we arrive, she asks me to come in with her for "support". When
inside, i notice that the place looks kinda "shabby", not very clean and
things piled up here and there in a small office with a dentistchair in
the corner.
Then i notice that the dentist is a little "too mellow" and sluring some of his
words, so i think "ok...better be a little on the watch out here.." Then he starts
to work, i look over and see that he is working in her mouth without glowes! and
he had not been near water after we arrived.. and there was a strong b.o that
filled the room.
So i`m starting to think "we should just get out of here", but he has already
begun to pull a tooth and a little to late to turn now.
Then, it happens. He looks at me and says; "hmm...could you hold her head
while i try to pull this sucker out?" eeeeeerrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmmm......ok......
So i think "i`d better get close and keep an eye on this guy", and end up holding
her head in place with my hands, while he pulls and slurs, gloweless, with blood
everywhere.
That was just unbelivabel. When we got out of there we were like;
"what the *** was that!???????" Never seen anything like it before or since.
And the payment, i asked how much, he just looked into the air and said
"hmmmmm, just give me X $ (total random number) and we`re cool". I give him
cash in hand, he puts it in his pocket and we`re out of there.
First and last time we went to that dentist. Sounds like a backalley dentist,
but we found him in the phonebook with the rest and he had all the papers
and things you have to have to be a dentist. My guess is that his personal life
or something had collapsed shortly before we made an appointment, he should
not have been going to work.

"""Should I really allow myself to be rendered unconscious and placed in

sounds so scary as if it wasn`t bad enough with the sharp things,
we throw unconscious of all things in there also
I am now sufficiently frightened for you. What recourse do you have? I don't know. Those lead blanets feel so good though....count backwards from 10,9,8......Take a deep breath. You're now under my nitrous oxide control. And nevermind that 'incident,' no worries.
With any luck, maybe your dentist will die within 6 weeks after your procedure. Negotiate the bill. _________________ same nightmare, different nap
I suppose a belief in sentient life buried on Mars doesn't necesarily impact on his ability to pull teeth? Then again I suppose I would have been uneasy. Maybe you should adopt the same attitude as Jack Nicholson:

Any perceived misrepresentation of your honored (un)profession is merely a figment of too much nitrous oxide. Take another deep breath.

OP: Have you used the dentist before? If you have and he seems reasonable, it might not be a problem; people can be easily distracted sometimes (or, like me, oblivious to a continuing conversation at all times), but his speech may not reflect on his skills.
Personally, I don't like going to the dentist's office. The dentist himself is generally not crazy, at least as far as I can tell, but one of the... nurses (what do you call them? Assistants, perhaps?) probably is. She likes to think that she is the dentist and gives contradicting orders. She also seems to do everything as hard and as painful as she can, making it uncomfortable. There are worse, I'm sure, but I don't appreciate her.
At the one I used to go to, there was a nurse/assistant lady who always poked my with the sharp tool. Every single visit, at least twice. "Opps! Sorry 'bout that." I don't know if she was clumsy or what, but still. _________________ “I shall not commit the fashionable stupidity of regarding everything I cannot explain as a fraud.” - C.G.Jung
