I'm having a couple of issues with the latest release and I think I know why but I don't know what to delete or how to deactivate some add-on extensions and stuff.

For one, I'm using AVG as my resident anti-virus. In my FF add-ons console, I see that I have AVG Safe Search 8.0 and AVG Security Toolbar installed but I want to get rid of them. The uninstall button is greyed out so I can't click them.

What plug-ins do I or do I not need to run FF 3? It's got a bunch of stuff in there like Adobe Acrobat, DivX Content Uploader, Java Platform, Microsoft DRM, Microsoft Store Netscape Plugin, Quicktime plugin, Shockwave Flash, WMP plugin dynamic link library. Of those, what don't I need to be running and how do I get rid of them?

I'm always hearing about "profiles" when dealing with issues with FF. I've looked, I don't have profiles. How do you get one?

I don't know about the AVG stuff, I don't know why those extensions are greyed out, but Google is your friend.

And a quick Google search revealed this:

http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.support.firefox/browse_thread/thread/

Just because I'm nice I'll post the results:

To cut to the chase for anyone with AVG / FF3 issues, the thing is:

- Shut FF
- Re-run your AVG SetUp program (you may need to go to AVG to download
the latest version; though if you still have a SetUp file that you've
run recently, that will work too).
- AVG SetUP will run its normal stuff, to which you say YES, as usual.
At a certain point it will detect that you already have AVG installed,
and offer you the option to alter or repair the installation.
- Choose the Alter option, and in the next screen UNCHECK the AVG
SafeSearch option (depending on exactly whcih AVG you have, it's called
slightly different things, but it's pretty clear either way). Then tell
AVG to continue.
- You'll need to re-boot the system when it's finished.
- I found that when re-started, AVG was giving ERROR alerts - fixed by
running AVG UPDATE (I had to do it twice.......). Maybe that's because
I ran a 2-day old AVG installation file, and it therefore backtracked my
AVG by a couple of releases. No big deal (and faster than downloading
the whole file again).
- If you now look at FFox3 TOOLS - ADD-ONS - EXTENSIONS, the AVG
extension will have vanished, and all should be well.

I was also having problems, FF unstable and all that, and I read (posted by AVG staff) that one can try uninstalling AVG, restart, then install it again, but DON'T CHECK the safe search and the other one.

now FF works great Smile

now how about the rest of the horse manure that's polluting Firefox? Can I get rid of them too?

Oh, and I still can't see any images on Wikipedia but I can on Wookiepedia and Memory Alpha.

for some strange reason, images from wikipedia were blocked. I searched for a specific image on google and a yellow bar was above the window telling ,e that images from wikipedia were blocked. I unblocked them and now I can see images in wikipedia!

I just recently installed AVG 8 on a customer who couldn't stand Norton. When the setup wizard has a list of components like that you should have unchecked them instead of hastfully going through setup. I would uninstall it and reinstall it and be careful about it.

You also don't need Java Platform, DivX Content Uploader or anything with Microsoft and Quicktime.
