does anyone know of a formula one racing game for the PC that:
*would work with vista without having to do any fiddling [so can be an older one if it will work fine].
*doesnt need a powerful pc to run
*isnt a hardcore sim,so a newbie to games can get used to it easily.

-dads birthday is next weekend, and am want to get him a formula one game,as he said he would like one for his pc,it would be his first proper game, and hes only just started using a pc this year so doesnt need anything too difficult.

am also hoping to get him a steering wheel to go with it.
would all steering wheels work with vista?

One of the Midnight Club games? I don't know if any in the series is available on Vista but I've seen my younger brother playing it once and he seems to be good at it, and he's only in primary school. Or there's Need For Speed if one of those is out on Vista. But you shouldn't have to do any fiddling even if they are old.

I'm not the hugest fan of racing games (unless you can blow things up)...I don't know if it's the same as Formula 1, but there was this old series of Indy racing games by Sierra that were pretty good (for racing games, at least). My dad used to really like Sierra's Nascar Racing 2. Not sure how well it'll run on Vista, I don't even remember if the game was DOS or Windows.

As for the racing controller working with Vista, I'd be more concerned about it working with the PC itself. For some reason my motherboard (with integrated sound) doesn't have a game controller port =/ So you'll either have to install a sound card that has one or find a USB steering wheel.

I still gotta install a soundcard (got a nice SB Live! laying around) so I can play me some Carmageddon Cool

Just so you know, this is somewhat contradictory...you need a powerful PC to run Vista Wink

thanks for replying everyone!

had gone to GAME without remembering had posted this.

it turns out all the games now have these 'vista compatible' stickers on them,if they are compatible,or they have the vista requirements on the back of the case, but didnt realise this until after had got home.
had been looking at the sold out range of games [the older ones] as they had a deal on,could only find two racing ones, and one war related one,and got that as he likes war stuff:
TOCA:race driver 2
Colin Mcrae rally 04
hidden and dangerous 2

as well as forgetting to read this thread, had forgotten to read up on these games first, because had a look on google when got back to see if TOCA2 was compatible as it did not have vista details on the case or a sticker, not one mention of it was good-no one had got it to run on vista, and they were all trashing their vista to put xp back on for gaming.

if there's any uk based XP using WPers who would like this copy of TOCA2,am will give/send it [for free] as have no use for it,cant give it to any staff as theyre not allowed to accept 'gifts' and sister has a mac.

For some reason,GAME have stopped selling steering wheels so bought him a GAMEware control pad instead, but will be getting him a steering wheel at some other time.

Deus_ex_machina,
aren't midnight club and need for speed quite new series? wondering if it would be like playing in slow motion with the frame rate from his graphics card,it's either a low end dedicated PCI xpress card,or the same, but integrated, will have to check at the weekend.

SabbraCadabra,
he would probably be better at the nascar ones,as the controls for formula 1 games are always hard, will ask him at the weekend and see if he would like a nascar one!

once vista has been installed on a powerful computer,it loses the powerful bit to become just 'computer',the operating system equivilent of Crysis.
the minimum requirements should be 'voodooPC computers'.

I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit on a single core AMD AthlonXP 3200 coupled to an nVidia GeForce 6800GT and an ASUS A7N8X with an nVidia nForce4 chipset. You don't need a powerful computer to run Vista

You can return it if it hasn't been opened yet.
