How am I supposed to read to my 10 month old when all she wants to do is grab the book and chew on it?

Ever heard, "I'll make you eat your words"...you think that's what they meant ? Actually, I would try to find soy ink books with natural fiber paper and let her chew that while you read another book to her. Is she teething?

Yes. She's got her two lower incisors. Waiting on the upper ones now. Looks like they're about ready to erupt.

babies gotta chew, just like a puppy, the trick is to give them something good to chew on or they will eat your best shoes. Books sound like they probably serve the function pretty well...got good tooth to them. Just make sure they weren't printed in China...don't ant any lead poisening Wink

Give her her teething ring,
then get a book with lots of pictures and if you have one that makes sounds use it as well,
you do not need to read out of the book, just make up story's out of the pictures.
just act like your reading and do a lot of fun stuff with smiles,
she will love you for it.

Actually, reading is less important to baby than chewing.
Suggest you buy some bath books for her to chew/read on.
Also, those cardboard ones taste nice.

We bought my sons some scratch and sniff books.... it was quite funny because he used to scratch and lick.

Your best bet is to give her something to chew/suck and then "read to her". Actually, don't bother reading the books, just point out the pictures and say "DOG" "CAT" "DOOR" etc...

I use to read to my kids when they were in their high chairs and so while they were busy with their finger foods, we could read to them. The bath books are a good idea, we use to use those too and then while they were slobbering all over that, we could read to them. Making up stories is great too....my hubby loves to do that at night with the kids. Keep trying, the effort is worth it!

She needs something to chew on- she's teething! Give her one book or a teething ring, etc. she can chew on - one of those plastic ones and then read another one to her.

I agree that the actual reading isn't that important either.

My son did the same thing -he gnawed on more books than I can count

Get her soft-books, books with fabric pages and board books. Activity books to help her sensory exploration are best for now. GEt books with different textures and bright colors, things to touch and manipulate, etc.

Babies chew, that's why they make cardboard books for them. ^_~

Personally, I haven't started reading to Rose yet, when she's older I'll start telling bedtime stories. Right now when she gets sleepy she is so fussy it's hard to keep her still, much let juggle a book at the same time!
