Hi,

I'm a new member just posting today. I have been reading for a couple of months and have learned so much from everyone, so thank you!

My 8 year old son was recently diagnosed with AS. He has had just one special interest since as early as young toddlerhood. It has expanded as he's gotten older and has been able to explore it more. He's now more interested than ever and there are no signs that he will lose interest in the future.

I am curious if any other people with AS or parents of children with AS have also experienced this. Most of what I have read here and elsewhere describes different special interests developing over time.

I'm 44 and the depth of my interests have changed but I have a ot of the same interests revolving around collecting rocks(arrowheads, fossils, shinny ones), medicinal plants, Native American cultures and beliefs, crafting and animals. One interest may take presidence over another but they tend to be "one thing leading to another" ....ie....started collecting arrowheads from walks in the woods--->learned about the people they came from--->interested in the plants these peoples used to heal----->interested in the animals that they respected/worshiped. They are seperate interests that are woven together for me. I often craft using recycled animal fur with a Native American influence.

My first real interest started around 3, and lasted until about 18. What is your sons? Mine was electronics. It was replaced with computers.

My son has a primary interest in robots. He said he wants to be a robotics engineer. He obsesses over bionicles and transformers. but they're both robotics.

before that, he was into yugioh and pokemon, but we didn't like some of the messages involved with that, so we removed them.

but still, no matter what - he has that primary interest.

he plays on the computer more now, but he watches Tranformers videos. he also does Transformer reviews and puts them all on youtube.

recently, i took him to lunch. and he talked about transformers the whole time. he'll talk with me as if i've remembered everything he's ever told me about transformers. which of course, i don't.

i truly think he can have a tremendous career in robotics. if he can navigate the NT world.

If he goes into robotics there is a good chance he will be working around others that are AS or more AS traits...he might also want to learn Japanese...they seem to lead the field in robotics.

My son's interest is in figuring out how mechanical and electronic things work. It started out with an obsession with pressing buttons and flipping switches as a toddler. It has evolved into a fascination with some mechanical objects and most electronic and high-tech devices.

If you are having a conversation with him, he will try to find some sort of technological aspect (whether it seems related to you or not) to bring the conversation around, so he can discuss what that button does or how those parts work together.

It has become a significant part of his identity.

He sounds JUST LIKE I AM! OR, more correctly, how I was. TODAY it is more subtle, and more likely to be about computers. DON'T worry though. He probably WILL move into computers. You can do many of the same things, it is faster, more immediate gratification, etc... EVEN many in electronics rely on computers! Look at microwave ovens, phones, etc... Even the B2 bomber(once called the hopeless diamond because it was so unstable), relies on COMPUTERS to compensate.

Of course, electronics is good also, and computers DO rely on that. Still, it is synergistic.

My 9yo son has some interests that have stayed the same: blocks and numbers. He now builds with kapla (1000 pieces at school and he wants MORE) and his ability to balance them is incredible! He starts with a little base and builds up and out to the sides - an arcitect in the making, perhaps? He also makes tracks for marbles to run down, which are very clever. He relaxes when he builds this stuff.
He is still good at maths and loves numbers, but doesn't obsess about it so much.
Apart from that animals have always been a big interest, and for the past 5 years, pokemon.

The general "theme" of his interests is the same, but they seem to develope with him and become more complex.

I have 2 kids with possible AS, 9 year old dtr and 7yr old son. My daughter is fascinated with animals. We have a dog, 2 cats and 18 chickens, they are her best friends. Her toys are animals, she draws animals and watches Animal planet a lot, she loves to watch E-Vet Interns and Animal Rescue, she loves to relate to animals, when she plays, she is an animal. My son, is a computer and video game nut. He can sit down with a new computer game, not read the instructions and figure out how to make things work. He will talk endlessly about these games too. He will try to draw pictures of the characters, and when he plays with his sisters he is those characters! His favorite games change over time, but he loves them all just the same. He is a numbers kid too and can figure things out very quickly, whereas my 9 yr old dtr struggles horribly with math.

I have always been interested in something. My interests include history, literature, the Olympics (especially track and figure skating), geography and animals, especially cats.

WOW, Maybe I am misreading, but I came home from school one day, and there were ants ALL OVER one part of my BEDROOM! Well, I took a closer look. They WEREN'T ants! They were baby praying mantises!!!!! I had earlier bought a couple praying mantis egg sacks, and they picked that day to hatch. Don't worry though, I took them all outside, and many grew to be nice and big, etc...

My son just turned 9 and these are some of his interests/obsessions:

The Titanic -- he knows details and facts that most people wouldn't know

Cats -- We have 2 real ones, 40 or so stuffed animal cats, reads books about different cat breeds

Legos -- Not just playing with them. He makes lists of the Lego set number. Knows the release dates and when retired.

Indiana Jones -- this is his latest obsession. He read the first two books in one week and starting on the third. This is being combined with the Indiana Jones Lego sets.

Rocks & Minerals -- this isn't a huge interest, but he has several books on them and is forever digging up different rocks. He takes those mini reference books to school so they can dig up stuff at recess. LOL!
