A weird problem - hope you can help me!
My son is usually very sensitive to smell - and I guess I am, too.
He has a great teacher, but she wears SO much purfume. He smells of it when he gets home - even his school bag smells, and after his bath, he still stinks! I find myself irritated as I keep noticing the smell. It makes me feel sick.
How do I go about telling the teacher not to wear so much purfume - or should I just leave it be? I don't want to insult her, but at the same time, it could cause a lot of problems with autistic kids. Or is this just MY problem? My son, funnily enough, hasn't mentioned it, but in the past has had very violent reactions to smells. |

Can you go to a third party and mention that you and your son have chemical sensitivities and would like the teacher to lighten up on it ? I can't stand most perfumes, (I do like a few lighter ones) because they are distracting and the worst ones give me headaches or make me feel like I can't breath. It's a valid thing to request and one that should be easily accommodated. He may not be annoyed but it probably effects others around her in a negative way and she is not even aware of it. _________________ Just because one plane is flying out of formation, doesnt mean the formation is on course....R.D.Lang

I did a post but it went MIA because it is my first one and I included a link that I found and searched for and spent a lotof time for nothing.
So will try again.
Basically I would get a letter from the Dr explaining the chemical sensitivity and how it affects your child and the smell that comes into your home
I would also get it written into the IEP that no one whocomes into contact with your child is to wear perfume or smoke, etc.
We had that issue with an RSP teacher who smoked and I saw him in his car all the time and the stench was out of this world.
I did find a few sites with stuff, but they are gone so maybe a google search on chemical sensitivities and IEP would help and also search for what asthmatics put in their 504plans. I have asthma and never had to take gym with a note from Dr.
Good luck |

We have the same problem....in our church, can't really fix that one though LOL. I agree with Krex to go to a third party, like maybe the principal. Getting a letter from the doc would be good too...good advice from these folks! I liked the part about getting that info into his IEP, that would eliminate the problem all together. Great advice!! _________________ "When life brings you to your knees, you are in a good position to pray!" |

Thanks for your advice - I will go to a third party, and also talk to my doctor.
It is an a difficult situation, because it means you have to overstep the teacher's personal boundary, so I think the idea of saying it is a general rule, and not a complaint directed at one single teacher, is good.
Thanks again! |

I would take it up with a third party as the other's suggested.
Personally I don't think they should be allowed to wear it to school at ALL period. To me, it's just as bad as smoking, the air quality in most classrooms is poor to begin with some days...and for those of us with breathing problems or problems with this stuff it can really make you feel like crap pretty quickly.
Combining 20 kids together all using different hair products, soaps, and deodorants is bad enough...then you have the teachers that have to marinate in Chanel #5 before coming to class. Ughh. _________________ *Normal* is just a setting on the dryer. |

| I agree - I'm more and more anti-chemicals. Bus rides and libraries are just awfull. |

Honestly, my sense of smell is very fine tuned but I can easily deal with smells.
How? Breathe through my mouth and the smell is reduced.
Complain to either the PTA or Principle that the teacher who uses perfume to hide the smell of her crusty, crab-ridden, rotting crotch is disrupting your son's neural processi via overwhelming his olfactory senses.
*Sage nod*
Failing that...napalm. Always works.
Regards

I wish somebody would have backed me up when I complained as a kid. But there was no diagnosis. I was just considered "difficult" due to my light and smell sensitivities. _________________ Then came the fall and all the crap

When I try to do that I end up being able to taste it, and feel even worse!
I'm glad you are getting your son help for this. I agree with the 3rd party thing. People can get highly offended when they feel you are treading on their personal boundaries.
My sons and I also hate perfumes!! I agree that teachers should not be wearing them. There are so many kids with asthma these days, let alone sensory issues etc. |

I talked to another teacher, who was really understanding and agreed that teachers shouldn't be wearing perfume!!! She'll bring it up as a general problem at the school.
What a relief. I was afraid I would offend someone.
Nice to know it helps to talk about this kind of problem.
Again thanks all |

What if the teacer has really bad body odor and has to use all of that perfume to cover it up? This could be disastrous. _________________ Then came the fall and all the crap

ha ha I don't think she does - but then I'd say rather she showered than covered it up.
BTW my son commented she didn't smell og perfume today - and he was in a brilliant mood. So maybe it was bothering him more than I knew. Also, my son would definately prefer B.O. to perfume! |
