I just got a chance to use a new mac today with the new "aluminum" keyboard with the chiclet keys on it.
It was freaking horrible and nothing like using a real keyboard. the only problem is that I can't find a sinlge review out there online that is negative its like everyone in the world loves this thing but me. it felt like i was using a calculator and not a computer. is it that everyone writing a review are mac fanboys that like to convince themselves that every totally crap idea form apple is the best thing ever? or is it that nobody gives a sh** anymore if anything is actually useful for a particular purpose anymore as long as it looks great?
I will take an "old fashioned" style keyboard any day of the week over something that looks good.
so am I out of my mind or is it not just me? |

I like selecting hardware, like the split keyboard. Too bad it isn't all fung shui.

I know you can use any USB keyboard with a mac. I just get frustrated when apple puts out sh** and very mac fanboy out there calls it ice cream and talks about how wonderful it is and how cool it looks. this is a seriously painful to use keyboard because the keys are not cupped at all it is all flat. but the fanboys will talk about how it took them a week to get comfortable with it and now they don't want to use anything else etc.
drives me nuts. these people are getting ripped off by apple and they keep begging for more!
these are the same morons that think having a non-removable ipod battery is a feature instead of a giant load of crap.
and before anyone says something along the lines of I should try it before i knock it. I have used one of these keyboards on a new mac that came into work and it is total crap. but since the people using it never learned to type faster than maybe 1 word a minute they don't notice how crappy it is and are all excited about how cool looking it is.
(I just made a double take and thought i was transported back into the 80s and nobody there understood why I thought the keyboard was some sort of joke) |

Yeah, I never really liked most of apple's keyboards and mice. Fortunately I like the keyboard on my macbook (the macbook pro keyboard, not so much). I have a non-apple external keyboard and logitech optical mouse that are fairly nice, also.
You can use any USB keyboard and mouse though. There are some people that actually do genuinely like apple's keyboard and mouse (and aren't just fanboying), so you can always sell them and buy whichever you like the most. |

| Let me get this straight... a mac fanboy (by virtue of owning a mac) is annoyed at other mac fanboys? I thought you guys were all a very tight-knit group... |

Not all mac users are fanboys. I love my macbook, but I bought it because it was a good value, not because of any love for the company. Besides my ipod & extra power adapter, I don't own any other apple stuff, and I don't intend on buying any unless it's actually a good value also. |

I actually do prefer the Mac chiclet keyboard. You mean the one where each key is sort of its own separate little button, with the little space in between each one? I really do like it quite a bit.
FTR: Lifelong Mac user, raised by a lifelong Apple fanboy, but moving towards Linux now.

I don't actually own a mac but I do work on macs for a customer of mine that is where I ran into the new keyboard.
(I do have a G4 tower but it hardly ever gets used)
The only time I've ever been a fan of apple was when I was in grade school and the Apple II was still a new thing. |

I had the same problem when I got my MacBook a year or so ago before the razor thin keyboard appeared on desktops. I didn't like it at first, but I got the hang of it. Then my MacBook became a desktop and I was using an external keyboard and I got out of practice.
Apple is too progressive when it comes to design and technology and forcing users with newer designs and technology.
I prefer the old clicky keyboards. Problem is they don't want to make them anymore because they want to make comps sell under $500, and making old fashioned keyboards are expensive to make these days.
There used one for the Mac called the Matias Taticle Keyboard, but they pulled the plug on it. It is discontinued.
I like my HP USB Standard Keyboard. Its a no frills keyboard, but I love the texture and I love the feel of the keys, especially with my texture sensory. They come standard with HP Compaq (the business machines) systems. And when I was using an HP Compaq system before I bought my own, I was (for a lack of a better word) in lust with the keyboard. Google it, and it might be one that you might like. |
