So, when someone calls you "autistic" as an insult, how do you respond to them?

I've tried using "so what?" and then answering with a known weakness about them, but I kinda feel that wasn't enough. Any ideas for a comeback?

You could try saying "And what's your excuse?" depending on the situation.

I'd just say, "Thank you."

I don't see how that would be an insult. Judging from the way aspie culture works, it would probably be more of an insult if they called you NT.

You could say to him "You think that is an insult, don't you? Did you know <fill in the blank> was on the Autism spectrum?"

See the list at wikipedia for your choice of whom to fill in the blank. I would choose someone well known, and highly respected, like Albert Einstein.

Or just tell him to go to wikipedia to avoid sounding ignorant in the future. You could say the list of people on that list is long and includes many prestigious people.

Of course you have to use your judgement as to what wording would be best for your particular situation. The person you are dealing with would be the main determinant of the best approach. Another variable would be whether anyone else is in on the conversation.

What most people believe is that a person is either 100 per cent autistic (they would think in terms of Raymond Babbit from Rainman) or not at all. They don't think in terms of a spectrum or shades of gray. They assume that no one they know (and possibly love) is "Autistic" so they think they can safely put the concept into the category of something that would be an insult. Many NTs (especially younger ones) value being "normal" (like everyone else) above all.

I tend to be non confrontational, so I would probably just shrug it off and let him go on his way as ignorant as he was when he said it. I would rather not risk escalating the situation when the only result of confrontation would be to educate him. I would not care what he thought of me enough to bother.

I just tell them to get lost and walk away. And then I'll pick them up on some inadequacy of theirs later in an acutely embarrassing way.

Wikipedia? Most people haven't even heard of it. They'd probably think it was some foreign disease or something. A dig doesn't deserve a serious and dignified response - indeed, if you were to give one you'd sound autistic.

I agree with you. But sounding autistic is not a bad thing. Actually, as I later said in that post, I would not say that myself. (I would think it though)

How about "You're right; you don't. You've got every right to be a complete dumb@$$."

On a lighter note, Not everyone thinks poorly of us. Yesterday, as I stood silently stimming behind the counter of the tattoo shop, I watched a young apprentice assisting a cute (but obviously highly buzzed) young lady with a recent piercing problem. He left the room for a moment and she looked at me and said "Do you always rock back and forth like that?" To which I replied "I'm autistic" "Wow, she said, her eyes widening, "You must be really smart!"
