If you wanted to come out about Asperger's Syndrome, would putting it on your profile on FaceBook(i.e. member of an Asperger Group) be a good way of doing it (without shoving it in people's faces)? _________________ Not by revolution but through evolution are all things accomplished in permanency.

I mentioned I've been diagnosed with it before and my friend did too on Facebook and no one really noticed. Like... No one said anything about it to either of us.

No, I'm not going to join. The only people I want to know that I have AS are family members, close friends and people on AS-related sites such as WP. All of my family members know already, as do some of my 'close friends' (for want of a better term.) I would rather not let most of my Facebook friends know about my AS on the Internet, without talking to them face-to-face first. _________________ ACHTUNG all WP'ers...I will not be online from Aug 18th for a while due to a house move. I was honest about for a bit but I took off because saw no point. However on my profile I have Wrong Planet and Awareness for Autism Spectrum Disorders so some could figure it out but most of my close friends know I have AS and ADHD anyway. _________________ "We swore one day to build the future with our own hands

I joined a the group "Asperger's Syndrome" on Facebook, just to see who would come to me about it, and sure enough, that's how I initially clued my folks in.

That's probably a good way if you were going to come out publicly to everyone. But I would want to tell close friends and such before I made it public, so facebook wouldn't be too great for that (unless you keep your profile hidden to close friends only anyways)

I am very open about my Asperger's autism. However, as a kid (when I was, like many aspies of the time, diagnosed with childhood schizophrenia), I never told anyone. I suspect that my change of heart has come, partially, as a result of being established in my career. I have also recognized that, by being open about it, I might be able to reach out to some of my students (who may be aspies, too). _________________ Mark A. I come out with it offline as well as online. My social skills have improved greatly and many people can't tell I'm different AT ALL, so it comes as a surprise to them. I'm a lot more comfortable about it. _________________ www.Last.fm/user/BadMoonReaper

Why not?
I kept it kind of an open secret back in high school for fear of making myself a target as back in middle school; a paranoia that was in retrospect unfounded.
As for now, it's not really something that you could figure out by looking at the profile, though in the coming months I too may start posting links found on WP.
I personally don't see it as mattering. Anybody who could adversely affect my opportunities because of my neurological makeup already has access to that information.
Speaking of banners and flags, we've really got to get our own ribbon or symbol of some sort. The puzzle piece ribbon is not only too chaotic to really describe us but there's simply too much association with non-aspie conditions and groups. |

I was thinking of joining the Wrong Planet group on Facebook but I thought people might think I have Asperger's then when I have PDD-NOS (but I prefer to call it High-Functioning Autism). I would prefer to join a group that simply said Autism or something. I hate the term Asperger's.

Great article, thanks! (Aspergers and the Big Secret...)
Also, the "N" story made me nutty! Why didn't they just let you paste the last letter? How awful! My son is exactly this way. A job is not worth doing unless he can put 200% into it. If he can't finish, he won't even start. This poses a problem at school, for obvious reasons, so he is coerced to "get his work done" so he can do something related to his interests. It's not a perfect situation. I can see why homeschooling aspies is a better fit. I'm not able to do this and don't know if I have the patience to do it.
Good reading.
