If I had that kind of money, I sure wouldn't buy the weird junk those guys buy. In one of the reviews linked to on the page, it said that one hedge fund trader has a giant gold harp sitting in a room of his mansion. Then there's the guy who compulsively buys cars, so many that even he doesn't know how many he has. Yachts, private jet airplanes, massive estates, $800,000 watches, $25,000 for a pair of shoes, custom made Bulgari jewelry. I personally think that it's a mental illness. I read an Indianapolis newspaper article about Tim Durham (the guy with the cars) that said as soon as he started making serious money he was out buying fancy cars. The article said that his company was taken private supposedly because it was hemorrhaging money from all of the CEO's bizarre purchases (nightclubs, cars, etc) and his high flying lifestyle.

I'm reading a book on Warren Buffett's investment techniques, and Buffett is richer than the hedge fund guys because he's so low key. He lives in a classic Victorian house in a historically significant neighborhood in Omaha that he's owned since 1957. He drives himself in a low end Cadillac. He doesn't know how to work a cell phone, and doesn't like PCs. I'd rather be Buffett than a hedgie. I personally would want not necessarily the money itself but the power it could buy. I'd like to call up Nancy Pelosi and order her to pay attention to disability rights issues or else her funding gets yanked. I'd like to raise awareness about autism and simply squash Autism Speaks with superior fundpower. I think it would take an aspie becoming a hedge fund titan to finally get NTs to realize that we're not burdens on society who need to be eliminated. Most aspies can work, we're just not allowed to by arrogant corporate managers.

I'd probably give most of it away.

I would pay for my college education, as well as that of my two older sisters. I would help my family pay down our debt and then help my friends from high school with their college expenses. Then I'd give most of the rest away. I don't need that much money. There's a good quote from Jane Eyre that I should dig out and post here.

I'd put it in a trust fund to take care of my children, their children and so fourth. Money really means nothing to me.

Buy Aero Dillon and let the current management keep running it as long as I could go fire the M 134 Miniguns every once in a while. Buy a county in a South American country to do what I want in.

I don't want it, other people need it, so I'd donate it.

If I had that amount of money I'd give most of it away. Even build a temple.

I'd make sure everyone in my close family had everything they wanted. I'd buy us all a plot of land wherever they wanted, money to buy or build a kick-ass house, a new car, a thousand years of healthcare. Their children would have fat trust funds they couldn't touch until they turned 18. The soup kitchen in my old hometown would get a very modern upgrade and a pantry overflowing with food. I would donate money to hospitals and homeless shelters in my parent's names. I'd start up my own business for myself and my wife. And if my parents were alive they would never suffer another day in their lives, rest their souls. They would have had ANYTHING they ever wanted.

My only extravagance would be to buy myself a very, very, VERY good new car and the best vehicle insurance known to man. I've always been very poor so my wife and I are always having old worn out cars with a lot of miles on them that always need a lot of maintenece and constant repair that just drains our money all the time.

And I better stop here or else I'm going to start crying. A little hope would be nice right now.

A lot of you said "I don't need money". I think this is why aspies struggle so much in life-we don't fit in, so we think we don't "need" money or jobs and so on. I've also read on these forums how aspies seem to have little ambition, they'd rather immerse themselves in their interests than struggle with a job. Unfortunately, the world runs on money, so those of us who "don't need money" are condemned to lives on the margins.

I'm not the type of person to want 70 luxury cars and a huge estate and a private jet and so on. But the things I DO want still cost money. I got sick of sitting around doing nothing and having no money, so I decided to start a business. Time will tell how it does. I hope I can make some money so I don't have to live with my parents and drive a worn out old car. It would be nice to get off SSI too.

I think it's ridiculous that some hedge fund managers have to buy $1 million custom rings from Bulgari because they don't know what to do with their money when there are so many worthy causes that could use it. It seems that a lot of them grew up working class with the idea that rich people live like Donald Trump, when in fact many old money families (such as European royalty and the Rothschilds) are comparatively frugal with their money. They don't like to waste it. The hedgies waste money.
