I've only seen Aussie rules a couple of times.
I don't think many people outside Australia know much about it. |

Nah it's played on a cricket pitch. Maybe it's a mixture of basket ball and football.
All the players wear tight shorts, so you probably might like it.
Best to get tweety_fan to explain it, it is a strange Australian game. |

Go the bombers! Yep, an Essendon supporter here. I'm actually an Essendon fan because it's a memento to a friend of mine, who died in a car crash over a decade ago and he was a Essendon supporter. I'm not a sports fan really, but eh, it a requirement somewhat to have a favorite AFL team in Australia, or else you'll look like a fool when caught in an AFL conversation.

| Living up here in Groot Eylandt we don't see much AFL as you call it, but we have our local league. I barrack for the Tiwi Island team, which wears black and yellow. I suppose if I were to follow the AFL, I would follow Collingwood because the have a aboriginal like me called Leon Davis. |

AFL was created in victoria by a bunch of cricketers. they wanted a way for cricket players to keep fit during the off season. the first official match took place near the current MCG. then it just took off from there. It is based on an aboriginal game.
aussie rules is played between 2 teams of 18. the basic object is to score goals by kicking it between the middle posts (there are 4 of them). A goal is worth 6 points. If you miss and kick the goal through the outside posts it is worth 1 point. miss entirely you get nothing.
as for aboriginal players there are something like 80 of them in the league i heard. there are also some guys from Ireland, and there may be some south africans in the future.
people outside australia do not see much of the game but that is beginning to change. The international cup is an example of this. People from a bunch of countries come to play AFL here. (not aussie expats they are citizens of the countries)
a cool story for this year is the Peace Team. It is coached by a legend of the game known as Dipper. the team consists of 11 people from israel and 11 from palastine. both languages are spoken at the training (hebrew and arabic i think they were).

That Australian Football is based on "Marn Grook" (the aboriginal game) is not true as there is no evidence to suggest this is the case. Likewise with Gaelic Football. One of the founders of Australian Football, Tom Wills, was schooled at Rugby in the UK. This school gave it's name to both Rugby Union & Rugby League.
Two distinct features of Australian Football are there is no offside rule and the ball can't be thrown.
I am a diligent student of Australian Football history and am happy to answer any questions - especially from those Apsies who aren't from Australia !!  |

have u seen that doco on the history Channel? the one that is on aussie rules called Spirit of Australian Sport Australian Football.
it was an interesting doco, it talked about the links between Marn Grook and AFL. did not say it was based on it just talked about the links.
it was also interesting to hear the stories of how highly people thought of the game eg.
there were stories of blind children going to the games with radios in their ears tuned to the games and cheering along with everyone else.
the feeling of belonging people feel when it comes to football.....
do u keep track of the modern game as well as the history? |

I don't have pay TV but my brother is sending me a copy of the show. I have lots of great dvds on the history of the game and yeh, I follow the game week in week out all year long !! Um, you might call it an obsession !!!  |

i have not been since last year. my dad is a member of the bulldogs team and so he took me along as a guest one game. the dogs were playing collingwood. dogs ended up winning.
Do u think the dogs will win this year?. lots of doggies members are apparently upgrading their memberships to guarantee themselves a grand final ticket.
it has been a great season for them. |

I don't get to see matches because I live too far away from anywhere but I've been to the MCG once and was at the SCG when Lockett broke the all-time goalkicking record.
The Bulldogs have been my 2nd side forever (after Collingwood) and they're going to go very very close to winning the flag this year. |
