Hi
What is a good harddisk brand? I had a 160GB harddisk that crashed today and it was only 8 months old or so? Right now i am stuck with a 3GB one =(. I only have 50$ and hope i will get another 50 by next week. I have had bad luck with maxtor as i remember when i was 13 I got a MAxtor and it crashed the second week. The one that crashed on me was a seagate.
Are all the harddisks the same except the HDD size? |

| Western Digital and Samsung make reliable drives, to my knowledge. |

I've had drives from most of the major brands and I've come to the conclusion that ALL hard drive brands have failure occasionally. Hard drives (especially the cheaper commodity IDE/SATA hard drives that even servers use now) simply will fail from time to time and backups are the only way to ensure your data survives.
If it's money that concerns you (i.e., don't want to spend extra on replacement drives) buy a drive with _at least_ 3 year warranty. Some even offer a standard 5 year warranty.
Also, some drive failures are due to non-drive issues. Cheap/defective/broken power supply is probably #1. A bum power supply can kill off a perfect drive faster than you can imagine.
As for answering your question, usually I buy samsung or seagate. Western digital is sometimes cheaper and has an excellent warranty replacement procedure, though I'd rate average reliability is a bit lower than samsung/seagate, from my experience. |

From my experience, Maxtors absolutely suck. I'd never buy one, because it seems pretty much every drive I have replaced has been a Maxtor. I'm personally extremely fond of Seagate drives, as I also am Western Digital. Samsung is alright too, but I mainly recommend Seagate and WD. Stay well away from Maxtor, Hitachi and Fujitsu, they are extremely bad karma..... _________________ Kind regards,

Seagates are good, as are IBM Desk/TravelStar drives. Toshiba makes decent 2.5" drives. I take issue with WD drives, as I've seen some of them die after about a year of operation. _________________ "Blessed are the Distinctly Alien, for they shall inherit the Earth." -- Genesis P. Orridge |

I've owned 10 different hdds over the years, 3 of them maxtor the rest seagate. The one maxtor drive died (first gen sata) but all the rest have been fine. The first 60 gb maxtor started to make high pitch noises, so I retired it. It was 6 years old though. I have never had a seagate die, nor have any of my friends. Only time I had any trouble was when one 500 gb arrived broken.
Seagates usually have 5 year warranties.
If you're worried about data integrity you can always put 2 hardrives in a redundant raid. |

I prefer seagate, they seem to be the most reliable, maxtor then samsung are also good, I would avoid western digital, they are garbage, and their portable drive have drm software included so you can lose your files. _________________ Visit me @ Neural Deviant

| Western Digital Flat Out. As a Former High School Tech Coordinator and a Computer Repair Specialist WD proves to have the most compatibility with SATA Standards and last the longest w/o issues. |
