I need a bit of advice. How do I decide if I should have a male or female piano teacher? I've found several near me by searching the internet. Do men learn better from men and women from women? Are autistic people more receptive to male teachers (if it's true, that Simon Baron-Cohen's extreme male mind theory)? I'm very socially clumsy and feel uncomfortable with people easily. My last piano teacher was a woman who would shout at me and was sarcastic. I don't like people like that, I just want someone to tell me in a straightforward way what to do and tell me when I do it right. I can't be impressive socially and apply logic to learning something at the same time.

The person is more important than the gender; that isn't to say that it won't have an effect. Do you response better to one gender over another? Does the opposite sex make things more confusing? Are you comfortable telling the teacher about what you need from them as an instructor? A lot of teachers won't or don't know how to adjust their style, so it may take auditioning some teachers along the way. Honestly... I would not worry about finding the best player to be your teacher - often times, they lack the sensitivity to recognize what is effective in others. Just an observation. Try to find someone who loves sharing music.
