Hi, so I've been perusing this site for awhile now and sitll am not sure if I have AS or not. I told my psychiatrist about the possiblity of it being a diagnosis and he said there was no way. Yet much of what is being said on this site rings true for me. In preschool I remember my parents saying I didn't interact with the other kids, however I had been born with a 25% hearing loss in one year which has been corrected. Later in school I did interact but my feelings were trampled on repeatedly until finally I just stopped trying. The only person who befriended was this girl who sometimes beat me up and took advantage of me..she was a very abusive personality, it wasn't just me. In middle school I had a best friend and her popularity helped me a little I think.
Okay, so now: I don't think I seem to have a problem maintaining relationships, my longest one so far was three years. I want relationships so I think the more you want something the more likely you are to work at it.
I think I come across as uncomfortably shy mostly. Overall I think upon first meeting me people usually think I am charming, kind, pleasant, and a little quirky. But once a relationship is started, I have trouble thinking of things to say that are interesting, my mind kind of goes blank. The times I do think of things to say, they are maybe two three sentences at most whereas it seems the other person will talk forever. Part of it is I don't really have much life exeperience, haven't really traveled and still live at home, though I do have good insight into people or so I've been told. Oh and I am very sensitive with my own feelings and other people's. I am not known to blurt out rude or innapropriate things, though I think I did when I was younger. People usually say I have depth and intelligence, but don't see it till they get to know me, which many people don't because I'm so quiet. It is generally a problem for me to be superficial, I feel like its offensive or something. If I have any special interest it seems to be the occult/metaphysics, astrology in particular. Mostly it seems to be a communication or slowness on my part. I have gotten better at reading faces mainly because I work at a department store and am face to face with people all day.
If anyone has any objective feedback I'd appreciate it! Thanks! |

Hi spiritgirl first welcome to the "right" planet...
As for not having any think to say when meeting new people, if any think like me when younger... in new situations my mind would go into complete jumbled chaos... but to be honest as get older still happens, but usually thats because I can niot relate to most NTs, tend to be able to talk to aspies none stop more in common I guess.
By what you say would be hard to judge if your on the autism spectrum, as could be or could have a number of associated conditions...
Some of this information may help, most of us are self diagnosed at first and then its finding a professional who understands and can diagnose us. So before being diagnosed, write down as much information as you can will really help, back to when you were a child. As we get older we learn to change and adapt, does not mean we do not still have those differences, but often have to keep or learn to conceal them..

Please feel free to contact me any time as I know only too well when first diagnosed even if you feel you know, it can be a bit of a shock, its a little like losing who you thought you were and having to find the real you all over again. It can seem quite a lonely journey at first, but happy to answer and be here for you.
So if you do get diagnosed be easy on yourself for awhile, as often with acceptance comes a grieving period - but what follows is a new wonderful understanding, it really was at this point a revelation to me as every think made sense all at once.
It really is the not knowing or understanding that does cause us so much unnecessary pain and misunderstood problems. _________________ "Believe in your self, we are who we are - as it can feel like an endless task trying to be someone else!" Hi spiritgirl, welcome to WP.
The best indicator of your aspieness, or not (short of a diagnosis) is to do the aspie quiz.
http://www.rdos.net/eng/Aspie-quiz.php
Give it a whirl and let us know how you go...
Also... If you mention a pre-diagnosis to a doctor, most will instantly deny it because that would mean that you think you can do their job as well as they can. _________________ Gavin.

| Thanks gbollard for the quiz link- it said I have about half as much NT traits as AS ones. I got 119 for the "neurotypical" part. Wonder if this is common or not? |

Neuro typical - Just a way of indicating a person who is not on the Autism Spectrum, as there is no "normal" - it’s just a concept that a majority of people agree on, as we are all born as unique individuals.
Some of us are just more differently minded more so than others or as Tony Attwood quote says:
" From my clinical experience I consider that children and adults with Aspergers Syndrome have a different, not defective, way of thinking." _________________ "Believe in your self, we are who we are - as it can feel like an endless task trying to be someone else!" Well, 119 is a low-ish score... I got 168.
My results are on my blog (Here).
The thing that is more important as an indicator IMHO than the score is the basic shape of the graph. You can directly affect the intensity of responses with subjective censorship (ie: marking yourself not as bad or not as good) but you'll still retain certain ranks. It's the rankings which define the shape of the graph.
If your graph is fan shaped with the flat bit in the middle and the fan going out to the right, it's a good indication that there's at least aspie tendencies. _________________ Gavin.

Incidentally; many "normal" people lead quite similar lives.
I'd suggest, to be certain, trying to get a SPECT scan. |
