I make most of my money gambling in Vegas, because I count cards, but I go nuts without a job, my family does not know about this, and I hope to god they don't find out. I want a job at blockbuster so I went through the interview because I want the free rentals and because I need something to do when there is nothing to do.

I made it though the interview, a women named Berny, who is the manager said: "She would call me Friday, if she was interested. For some reason I don't think it works that way and it is bothering me, so what do I do?

I hear from NT's that if you got the interview you pretty much have the job, but I recently applied at radio shack and they told me the same BS and never called. I wish the companies would just be strait up about either wanting you for the job or not.

I've never heard that and that doesn't even make sense. For just about any job there are more than 2 people applying. Obviously, only one of the applicants will get the job.

I work at Subway and people are always applying, even when we're not hiring. When we were hiring, we would have close to 50 applications. Of those, no less than 5 would be interviewed.

It's not like we're going to hire 5 people when we have only two positions to fill.

My NT dad says that you should reasonably expect a job if you've been through 5 or 6 interviews. That means 5 or 6 INTERVIEWS, not 5 or 6 applications.

... and that is probably 5 or 6 interviews at the same place!

Why would you get 5 or 6 interviews at the same place? If they interviewed you once, they won't waste time interviewing you again. At best, you might get a second interview if you apply a few months later. But I don't know why you would waste your time interviewing at the same place or why they would waste their time.

After interviewing you, they'd most likely move on to more promising applicants.

It has happened to me, especially when applying for jobs/contracts with the federal government. In the civilian sector, usually only two or three are involved, with the last one being the "You're Hired!" interview/orientation - although I went through 5 with ITT, and 6 with AMROC.

So, it might be more correct to say that if they call you back after the initial screening, then you may be under serious consideration for the job.

There will normally be two or three interviews ...

HR interview - This one checks that you're not a freak ... the interviewer will typically know less about the job than you do.
Technical interview - this one checks if you can do the job
Hiring interview - OK, you passed the two above, so do your expectations re: pay and conditions match what the employer can offer?

If there are a number of good candidates, there will be additional rounds of technical interviews

Additionally, for sensitive positions, there may be security interview; or interview with VP's, etc.

Retail is a funny beast. It depends less on the company you're applying for or the skills needed than how many other candidates are available in that area. My first retail job was just after a recession, in a town where even retail jobs were hard to find. I think I got hired at the third place that interviewed me, and they required 2 interviews - one was an HR interview and assessment test (what change would you give someone if it costs $13.81 and they give you a $20, etc), the second interview was with the department manager and this external or corporate guy - no idea who he was as I never saw him again. But, on the other hand, if you're applying for jobs in a town where stores advertize "Now hiring" on their billboards, then they might just want to screen you to make sure you're presentable and have at least marginal social skills.

I say even if you don't need the money, go for it. I wish I was in your situation... then I'd be free to work somewhere that looked like fun (free movie rentals, get to talk to other staff about movies), than somewhere I hate because it pays slightly more and will qualify me for other miserable jobs in the future. Sad But (1) it's good to do something productive and you can't help but enhance your social skills which will probably enhance your life, (2) your parents won't question where you get your money to buy stuff and they won't nag you to get out of the house, (3) if you need to get a job in the future - because you've been blacklisted at all the casinos, or because you enjoy the stimulation or whatever - people won't question this big empty period on your resume, (4) free movie rentals! Man, I need to learn to count cards. Wink

It depends on the size of the company. At Microsoft, outside candidates get interviewed by:
- 1 recruiter / HR person
- 4 technical people
- A senior manager (if enough of the 4 technical people like you)
- Back to the recruiter at the end of the day

When I got my job there I made it through those interviews plus two other senior managers (they have two competing groups interview you) but that was non-standard. The whole thing lasted about 7 hours. Then they have an employee take you out to dinner (not part of the interview - just someone you can ask questions without being evaluated).

Okay, as someone who's worked at Blockbuster before, I can tell you that you'll only have one interview, MAYBE two if someone other than the hiring manager interviews you. This could happen because someone new is learning to interview, or because the hiring manager is on vacation or something.

If someone other than the store manager does the interviewing, the store manager is still the person who gives them a yes or no.. so it does depend on their opinion of you as an employee. What your interviewer said makes complete sense in a retail job. As long as you seemed generally friendly and interested in helping customers find the movie they want, and learning about movies, you should be fine.

If you don't hear back soon, call and thank them for the interview, and ask if a decision has been made. Don't be too pushy, just a simple, quick call, but you want to seem like you really want the job. This will make most managers notice you and be more likely to hire you.

Good luck! It's a fairly simple, mostly fun job, and the free rentals are really nice Very Happy

This amazes me. Why do they torture people like this? Maybe IT consultants live in a weird alternate universe where things make more sense. 98% of the time, I get exactly 1 interview. At the end, I either have it or I don't. I'm nearly always offered a job at the end of interviews (i put on a good stage performance and have a gigantic resume). The only time I'm not is when they're interviewing more people than they have spots, and someone beats me on the bill rate. The few times i've interviewed for salaried jobs, there's been two interviews tops.

I've had to interview people for IT positions on several occasions. I can ask half a dozen technical questions and tell within 30 minutes whether someone will be able to do the job. I'm always mystified when companies need all day or several attempts to evaluate someone.

Edit: ok, there was that one interview at Citadel. They tortured me for six hours. I passed the worst technical interview I've ever had. The manager wanted to hire me, but his manager killed the deal when he found out I had a life outside of work and wouldn't give them 60 hours a week. I guess they did me a favor.

Job is not fine, but you have to pay invoices .. you get lots of thing to pay, live is not cheap. At least life in an AS head is very cheap. To imagine free.
I hope NTs will not tax AS for thinking.
