Yeah, that happened to me yesterday. I always find it hard to avoid the awkward silence at the end of a conversation. I think it's a problem for a lot of people, so don't feel bad about it.

If you've just bumped into each other on the street, sometimes you could make up an excuse to leave (e.g. 'I really have to meet so-and-so, but it was lovely chatting to you'. The down side of that is, if you're a bad liar like myself, it can sound really false.

Another option could be to just ride the awkward pauses- they're there for a reason, or otherwise people would just keep chatting all day. When you come to a lull and you want to move on, just say something along the lines of 'well, it was great to catch up with you- good luck with [insert something the other person has just told you about]'. Then you can just smile and move on, without feeling rude.

I just use a standard cycle of talking.

Me: "Hey. How are ya?"
Them: "Good, you?"
Me" Good. C'ya"

I never like stopping and chatting. I prefer to always be moving.

Nobody ever tries to get my attention because most of the time my face is hidden by my hood and I generally move fairly fast so they can't catch up.

Regards
Ashley

Me too, that was wonderful! Made me think of all the times I've wished I could interact that efficiently with people I DON'T dislike, though sadly it just doesn't happen for me. Yeah yeah, but I don't really care what people think of me, I just have a strong sense of propriety.

And all this has made me think of a quasi-relevant quote: "The only man who is really free is the one who can turn down an invitation to dinner without giving an excuse."
