A long time ago my mom put a glade plugin in the hallway next to my bedroom. The smell was too strong for me. I eventually unplugged it and moved it to a different location. Anyone else had a similar issue? I also went in the Yankee candle shop at the mall in my area the smell was quite strong. It made me not stay in there very long (no rhyme attended).

I can't stand the sell of Air sprays (lysol etc. or those auto Air Wick whatevers) I also HATE candles and the detergent aisle (I can wash clothes but the whole mixer on the aisle makes me want to gag) my family thinks I'm crazy!

I understand. Also Pinesol. Pinesol has quite a strong smell.

I do like scented candles. However, going in a store full of them like Yankee candle has me turning around and leaving.

I can't stand a cleaner called "Fabuloso." It stinks! The cleaning ladies at work use it, & it makes me feel sick every time. I also don't like strong perfumes, anything that has a chemical type odor, or petroleum products.

Going through the perfume section of a dept store can also get to me...gives me a headache. When I was younger, I avoided these aisles like the plague. I'm able to tolerate it as long as I don't linger.

I do like fruity or tropical scents...citrus is really good or coconut.

it is not uncommon for many people with AS to have hyper acute or hypo acute sensations, this means that they can either experience smells that other cannot, or can not smell other smells that are obvious to everyone else in the room.
the theory is that this olfactory bulbs ( the nerves in your nose that transmit smell to the brain) are linked to and related to the Amygdala which is a believed sourced of As problems. If you can accept that connections between the amygdala and the forebrain are a neurophysiological difficulty recognised in AS and you accept that the olfactory epithelium is connected to the olfactory bulbs, then the explanation of hypo and hyper smel is related to another amygdala connection anomaly.

Air fresheners, aerosols, and perfumes can be irritating for me, though a lot of the times it's not really the so much the fragrance, as it is the binder agent for the scent. Essential oils generally do not bother me, though scented products like air fresheners perfumes, etc. will bother me to the point that I get a pounding headache.

It would depend on a multitude of factors such as the scent used, the amount of it used and even the hunger factor ( if I am hungry, even slight smells can make me nauseous).
I actually like the ones that smell like cucumber-watermelon or kiwi-watermelon. But I don't care for anything that's too vanilla or lilac--- those scents get overwhelming.

Air fresheners almost all make me want to gag ... it baffles me how people can set up those damn things to spray the room every 9 minutes!

I get headaches from perfumes and sprays. I get light headed, I start to sweat and get anxious and angry. I had to go to the store with my son and pick out an underarm deodorant for him that I could tolerate.

We don't use any scented candles in our house (although plain beeswax candles are okay) and definately no scented sprays. It isn't pretty.

I stay away from places that have them or use them. Cologne and perfume is especially bad for me. I've been like this for years and years. I was so happy when many places went scent-free. It was one less trigger for a meltdown.

However, as mentioned earlier, I can tolerate most essential oils. Interesting...perhaps it is the other stuff they use along with it.

The worst for me are airfreshners out of a can, I can smell the propellant and all the industrial chemicals that go into making it, the actual 'smell' part seems more like an afterthought!

I feel the same with Febreze, any kind of car air freshners, the only ones I can stand are incense sticks which smell more 'real'

Another thing I hate is people who wear too much aftershave/perfume, as I find the chemical smell clashes with their human smells in the most horrid way and creates a very sickly background smell

Many commercial air fresheners have chemicals that are actually drugs, which shut down your smell receptors so you won't smell whatever they are trying to cover up. For instance the ones in gas station bathrooms. I hate those with a vengance, just because they are messing with my body without my permission.
