I was recently diagnosed with FMS or Fibro-Myalgic Syndrome. It explains alot of my fatigue and aches and pains.
I was just wondering if anyone else suffers from this, and how do they manage? |

My sister has it and I have seen a fewer others on the board mention it. I do think there maybe a connection between AS and sleep disturbance of fibromyalgia as well as auto-immune over functioning. My BF has MS and is very hyper sensitive. Just touching some parts of his body is painful to him. He also has sleep disturbances( narcolepsy) and many AS traits. There has to be some common link for all these but I don't know what it is for sure.
My sister takes some medications to get deeper sleep for depression and anxiety, but my BF seems to have some improvement from taking Adderall for the narcolepsy as well as a Melatonin at bed time. I believe there are several support web-sites if you goggle. _________________ Just because one plane is flying out of formation, doesnt mean the formation is on course....R.D.Lang

No, but I'm undergoing evlautions and diagnosis for what appears to be Rheumatoid arthritis and possibly Lupus as well. Not fun.
I hear a lot of people on the spectrum have autoimmune problems and that autism itself may be partly autoimmune. I also have diabetes as part of my autoimmune problems. |

| I have fibromyalgia and it hurts. There are so many trigger points that hurt on my body and I take medicine for it and it helps. Lately my right shoulder has been hurting a lot but I don't know if it is related or not. I also get massages every other week because my muscles are so bad and tight. There are times during the massage that I have to tell her to stop because it is a really sore spot and the pain would be too much for me to handle. How fun!! Pain!! Not. Pain is no fun. |

If you haven't already done so, you should make sure that you keep your diet healthy. Processed foods will take a lot out of you. Also, pace yourself, and try to keep your stress levels down. |

At times I've thought I might be on the cusp of that. I know when I eat certain foods my joints can feel achier, and these tend to be the foods that you're supposed to avoid with fibromyalgia - especially nightshade vegetables like peppers and tomatoes. I think moderate exercise - yoga, bike rides, swimming - can help too.
Incidentally... I recently made a visit to Port Hope, which is supposedly one of the most toxic towns in Canada. One of the biggest industries in town is the uranium refinery, which has been under emergency shutdown recently because the chemicals were leaching into the ground and they were worried it would get into Lake Ontario. We just spent about half an hour driving through town, just to see what the place was like, and I found the closer we got to the uranium refinery, the more my joints started to ache and my neck tensed up and my throat hurt. By the time we got back up to the highway and drove to the next town over, my pains were gone. So whether this is related to FMS, I don't know, but I do think there is a lot of truth to that whole toxin theory. Watch what you eat and make sure you're exercising to move those toxins out of your system! |

Diagnosed about 6 or 7 years ago...I think I had it long before then though, it just became worse after having my son and due to the stress in my life at the time.
I started having problems with chemicals and fragrances more so around then too.
I started reading labels more, eliminating some of my cleaning products, detergents, etc...to switch to more natural alternatives. I try to avoid processed foods, I eat very little meat and more veggies now. I take a multi-vitamin, essential sugars, and a B12 supplement when I'm feeling really run down.
I'm mowing 3 lawns this summer, mine, my mom's, and a neighbor's who is having health problems right now. I'm not on any medication except for an occasional Ibuprofen and my inhaler for my asthma. Six years ago I was a mess, I've definately seen an improvement and at present I'm managing pretty good, but the improvement was a very slow and gradual one, not something that happened overnight.
Stress is a killer, for me it makes the sleep issues I have much worse, which in turn increases the fatigue and pain. The fatigue for me is the worse part...I was always very active, slowing down was a major issue with me.
This crap forces you to take things basically day by day and listen to your body more...and slow down somedays whether you like it or not. I've been exploring reflexology at present, so far it has seemed to help. You have to find the coping strategies that work best for you...just remember that no matter how crappy you may feel today...that is no guarantee you will feel more crappy tomorrow...and it's not a death sentence. It's easy to get depressed about it, and that's another enemy you have to fight. _________________ *Normal* is just a setting on the dryer. |

Yes I definitely think I have it because of much fatigue and then strange pain that isn't easy to point out to a doctor. I wish I could get a diagnosis for it.
Some doctors I've come across act like it's just depression which irks me since I've been on meds for a while now and haven't experienced true depression. I'm glad someone's brought this up on WP. I heard there has been some research as of AS connected to symptoms of fibromyalgia. _________________ Oh you can't help that. We're all mad here.
