Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the only people allowed to participate in the Special Olympics physically handicapped and mentally disabled. How do aspies fit into this, its mainly a social disability and none of the events are well, social.

So explain to me how aspies are in there, is it just because of the autism generalization

This is from their website on eligibility:

To be eligible to participate in Special Olympics, athletes must be at least
8 years old and identified by an agency or professional as having one of the following conditions: intellectual disability; a cognitive delay as determined by standardized measures such as intelligence quotient or other generally accepted measures; or a closely related development disability, i.e., functional limitations in both general learning and adaptive skills. There is no cost to participate in Special Olympics. All prospective athletes must register to participate in Special Olympics.

Aspies with motor co-ordination problems or depth perception problems might qualify?

Okay I'll explained it the same way as my mom did to me.
ASD's are both intellectual challenged and developmental challeneged disabilities which both are qualified to be an athlete in Special Olympics. AS is more of social developmental challenged disability spite we are all able to socialize in some ways. Does that make things somewhat clear. Also being a Special Olympics Athlete is not really a bad thing at all to be honest because I'm one myself since I was eight years old.

I'm not interested in any sort of competitive athletics, especially the Special Olympics. I work out just to relax and get in shape, and that's it.

It isn't really competitive due to those who compete in Special Olympics do it for fun mostly. That what I do mostly because it is a good way to socialize basically.

That's interesting. I've always thought that if one is going to compete in a sport, it may as well be fun. I hadn't thought about it as an opportunity to socialize. I need to learn a lot in that department, too.

It is actually true since I have made friends in Special Olympics Virginia like my friend Michelle and others. A lot of good things happen in the Special Olympics. Cool

Spain fielded a basketball team a while back full of people who were supposed to be mentally handicapped. Only none of them was. They won gold.

wasn't that what got all competitors with learning/developmental disabilities banned from the para olympics?
