There's a conspiracy theory that the US is actually still owned by the British Crown through the
Virginia Company (isn't the president related to the royal family ? )
Perhaps the authorities here in Britain are aware of this secret and they didn't see a reason to mark July 4th as a special day.
We have other days of celebrations in these islands for the patron saints of each country.St George for England,St Andrew for Scotland,St David for Wales and last but definitely not least St Patrick for Ireland. (Although you can bet that apart from St Patrick's Day on Mar 17 the
other days are relatively low key and not everyone can even remember offhand what the dates
are ! )
A Happy 4th of July _________________ I have lost the will to be apathetic |

Certain kinds of fireworks are illegal here, as I imagine it is in other places. But that doesn't stop people from setting them off.
Those are the really pretty ones too. _________________ Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.

LOL
Not to sound offensive but I would think those who were patriotic to their country Britain, wouldn't be that pleased with celebrating a day when Great Britain lost to America in the Revolutionary War.
Now I've heard of Guy Fawkes Day!!
Wasn't that also in the movie V For Vendetta? _________________ Oh you can't help that. We're all mad here.

I think the idea was Britain celebrating because, in retrospect, they are glad to have gotten rid of us. |

What makes you think they lost? 4/7/1776 was not the end of the war, by any means. The actual war and it's battles went on until 1791 at least, then the French got involved and bogged them down until 1815. The Boston Tea Party was post Independence Day, and was still considered one of the major skirmishes with the Redcoats. In the end, Benjamin Franklin signed the declaration with King George III, sometime after 1780. British and French territories still remained up until the Civil War, but were handed over and the US gained full Independence then. _________________ I am the Lord of Deadside.

Happy 4th American Aspies!
Here in Portland, Oaks Park has a display set for 9 PM tonight
and Fort Vancouver does theirs at 10 PM, simulcast on TV.
I'll be watching the Ft. Vancouver fireworks from Marine Drive in Portland. _________________ It's time to introduce a little anarchy. |

I'll be sitting on my porch watching the neighbors set off illegal fireworks. _________________ Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.

Ah yes, V for Vendetta. You really must get the illustrated novel, it's quite good.
As for Guy Fawkes, he tried to blow up Parliment, you know ....
We don't celebrate an Independence Day as such, because we've always been independent. (With the exception of the Roman occupation, which inspired the pagan Bodacia rebellion which was put down rather quickly.) _________________ I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. An Apprentice in my Local blew up his left hand with a large firecracker in July of last year. He was holding it in his hand after drinking booze and it had a quick fuse. I was visiting him in the Hospital when the Surgeon tasked with ensuring that he had a good stump for the prosthesis brought in the picture that had been taken in the Emergency Room two nights before. It was awful looking and caused the young man ( who had been in the Marines ) to realize what he'd lost and broke down in tears. I felt awful for him, he would have made a good Electrician. |

Remember, remember the 5th of November...
the Peace of Paris ended the war, in 1783 (or that's what they taught us in school...
Don't think that the British would celebrate it, any more than Canada day, or whatever the Oz-folk got in the early 1900s... |

Funny enough, the neighbors across from my house
are setting off obviously illegal fireworks from Washington State.
In Portland, The Waterfront Blues Festival
has a display set for 8 PM, which is in roughly 25 minutes. _________________ It's time to introduce a little anarchy. |

The people of Australia celebrate their national day on Jan 26. Drives the abos crazy, seeing as they think they were invaded in 1788. Thing is, if it wasn't the Brits, the Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish or Indonesians would have colonized sooner or later, and the abos would have been wiped out by 1820 at the latest. A country is what you make of it, and a civilization is founded on the strengths of the people that make that country, and therefore, whatever national day people celebrate, it comes down to the struggles of the fore-fathers to make whatever they could in adversity.
Down here in Gehenna, every day is a national day.... _________________ I am the Lord of Deadside.
