If you live in the USA (I'm not sure if there are July 4th firework shows in any other countries), you may be seeing some big bursts of light and some very loud popping sounds soon.

I wonder how some of us react to this tradition of high sensory stimulation and how it may affect your view of firework shows and the Fourth of July in general.

I go to the fireworks a lot and sometimes it is actually kind of soothing, but when they get too loud I cover my ears and want to bury my head in the sand!

nope, July 4th is just us, and maybe another nation or two. More like coincidence (Britain has Guy Fawkes day, Mexico has Cinco de Mayo...and I'm not sure about other countries...Wink

I like watching them, but usually I'm too busy doing something else to go...Wink

I like fireworks (not firecrackers) but I really dont care for crowds so I stay home. We are lucky that we live behind a park so there is a fireworks display directly over my back yard. It keeps my kids happy, its pretty, we can all plug our ears, and its just us Very Happy .

Certainly not here. If the startling from the fireworks wasn't enough to do it, the smoke from all the smokers would be. Fortunately here the fireworks are over and my cat and I are safely curled up together and our nerves are not as rattled as before.

I like the sound of thunder/firearms/fireworks. I wouldn't go to a specific set place to see such, however (see: people bad).

I don't mind the fireworks. I hated them when I was little though (too scary & loud)

there is bonfire night here which is just like that.
do people set off fireworks for weeks or months before and after independance day like they do for bonfire night now?

am self medicate heavily during firework season and stay squeezed in the corner of the least noisest room, wearing earplugs and ear defenders,am end up meltdowning in the end when medication wears off,it is getting harder to hide from the fireworks because so many people do it at random times, often months before or after here now,am think they should be banned and only allowed in organised displays [organised not by the public].

When I was a a young kid we used to go to a circus every year that was held outside. That is, not in a tent, not in an arena, but in an outdoor stadium. And it always ended in fireworks. And I hated the fireworks. I've no memory of fireworks on the fourth and how I reacted as a kid, but those fireworks at the circus I just didn't like. I remember one year my parents telling me we were going to an indoor circus instead. Yeah, no fireworks. Although, I recall around then thinking I didn't need to avoid the fireworks anymore.

I said "seldom," but that's just lack of access. I love fireworks. I get a thrill watching them.

Yes I like fireworks. I also used to like getting firecrackers and the smaller fireworks. But I cannot get them in Rhode Island. They are illegal.

The only fireworks that I don't like are the REALLY really loud ones...the ones that shake the ground and you can feel it in your chest...I can't stand those ones Mad

One time my friend had a great idea of hiking through the woods and sitting almost directly underneath where they fire them off...that was wayyyyy too close for me. I was freaking out =/

I like fireworks because I love beautiful lights, but I am always the one holding my ears when fireworks were set off. This year I'm just going to have to watch the neighbors fireworks through my window because I just had surgery about a week ago and I'm not up to going to my family's fireworks displays.

While my dad was in the military, during my childhood, we'd always go watch them. Once we got to the States, that stopped. We'd watch them on tv. Now I don't really care. My #4brother will buy some every once in a while and we'll light a few off. It's a good few minutes of fun.
