Motorcycles drive by and they're extremely loud as heck. Especially the Harleys. What's with that?

yes,they are noise torture.
the harley type bikes have a more solid lower, powerful noise, but the motocrosses sound more like strong chainsaws all going off at once ,they're all nasty for noise,it depends on area live in which sort of bike happen to be tortured with most, and here it's mostly motocrosses and quad bikes because of the local meadows/land they use illegally.

motorcycles are loud because there are no mufflers.

it is easier to wear ear plugs than to muffle every motor on the planet, and that's a fact.

I always kinda thought it was because motorcyclists think it's "cool" to obnoxiously rev their engines all the time.

I also hate the noises that motorcycles make. Completely unnecessary noise, and it puts me very much on edge, especially when it comes from outside my range of vision. Even when I have my iPod on, it can still come out of nowhere and shock me, so blocking out the noise doesn't work too well. :\

One friend's dad said something that's very true, probably - if motorcycles were made to be quiet, no one would buy them.

Because people on cars don't look for motorcycles and often don't notice them when they are a few yards away.

But they will certainly hear them if they are loud!

My bike is not loud at all, but that is just because I can't afford to mod it right now or to buy a bike with a throatier exhaust.

I don't think they're loud, rather, I don't like the pitch of such.

The second worst thing I've felt was the usual compression brakes of a large truck as I stood near one at the petrol station; it's a high pitch, plus they're quite loud. It hurt my ears and head.

well, there is a certain frisson of excitement when the vibration through their ah. . fundament energizes the rider, yes. . . it being 'obnoxious' is just a side effect.

Perhaps as Aspies we are even more sensitive to the sound of a loud bike than others...

I am extremely sensitive to sounds myself. But think it has to do with what the sound it represents. A ticking clock drives me up the wall and can hear it from another room. Likely it is the whole "time keeps on ticking away" feeling it gives me.

But the sound of a motorcycle, especially a Harley, goes right to my very soul and massages it.

I've always wondered why they don't put mufflers on motorcycles. I know a muffler lowers a vehicles horsepower, but do you really need to run them at maximum capacity?

Ahh well. It's only a matter of time before High Gas prices force more people to switch to pure electric, which make virtually no sound at all.
