I notice all the time that in some environments with a lot of noises, NTs communicate just fine with each other, but when I communicate with someone, I'm always distracted by background noises. The best example of this is the place where I used to work. This was a dairy storeroom, and I couldn't converse properly because I was distracted by the generators that cooled down the place.

Does anyone else experience this?

The humming of a machine in the background usually doesn't distract me that much when I'm busy doing something or talking to someone. I tend to get used to it.

I hate the buzzing noises of my DVR player and laying down to go to sleep at night I hear all kinds of pops etc. It's annoying. I also hate the whistling sound of Fireworks. Smile

All the time. I use ear plugs and headphones most of the time. Usually they don't help.

When I sleep I have a fan running for white noise. If I don't have that, every little sound drives me nuts and keeps me awake.

I have that problem too.

I can deal with background things when I can use my earplugs, but that doesn't really work when I have to actually listen or participate in communication. I'm an undergrad and taking a class where the instructor requires that we break into small groups for discussion questions (hellish!), and with 40+ people all talking at the same time, I can't focus on anything!

Does anyone here have any strategies for overcoming the background noise in order to meaningfully participate in communicating either one-on-one or in a group setting?

Once in a while but not really to be honest.

@Squidy - The best thing I've found is active noise cancelling headphones. They're okay at filtering out some of the background noise, but aren't very effective at filtering out voices so you can still hear people while wearing them. They're not perfect, but they help.

But actually, the way I've found them most useful is not in their ability to filter out noise but as a way to get NTs to understand that background noise is distressing. It's a way to make the problem visible - you aren't being anal, you really find the noise that distressing. When people can see evidence of a disability, they can become more sympathetic.

yes!
this is a major issue for am,and am find no one else [apart from online autistic community] understands.
am fed up of being told am cant have everything own way when it comes to staff having to ask others to stop slamming doors downstairs, stop shouting etc,as if being overloaded from distractive noises is about 'having own way'.

Ohhh ya, I went to a pretty wild party lastnight with fireworks going off, drunk people everywhere and music. Lots of backround noise, primarily the steady talking of 40 people can make it difficult to communicate with the 4-5 members of the smaller group I was apart of at that party.

It has been a problem my whole life.

Yes, one of my diagnosiss are CAPD(Central Auditory Processing Disorder) Can't block out any noises, my hearing is soo hyper sensitive, and everything I hear is esculated so like if I hear somebody honking their horn many neighborhoods away it almost sounds like its down my street, it stinks, especially when you have neighbors with young children hehe.

Well, I can deal with things loud and constant. (E.g Music at a party, with many people talking and such)

But for example, when I'm doing my own thing behind the computer and my mother begins whistling softly, I'm very annoyed and ask her to stop.

The humming of machines I can handle, unless it's a particularly annoying hum.

Perhaps straying off a bit from the subject of background noises, but I hate it when piano's are played near to me, it hurts my ears.

In a word.......YES. However I am able to filter out some noises. Like Im used to my kids making noise. My 3 year old autie "sings" a lot and Ive learned to filter that. I have a lot of trouble when Im around a lot of people having different conversations. I cant focus on what is being said to me....crowds and parties are impossible for me sometimes. I am also distracted by smells and interesting things that come into my line of vision. Sometimes I realize that Ive been distracted and I dont have such a problem telling the person that was talking to me "I have no idea what you just said" Razz

Noises bug me most when I'm trying to concentrate on something that requires a lot of focus. Last night the neighbors went nuts with the fireworks, and I didn't mind the noise until it just went on for hours (I think they bought the entire fireworks stand). But if a coworker turns the radio up too loud while I'm tattooing, it might as well be a drill Sargent shouting in my ear. That's gotta stop right now.

The louder the background noise, the harder it is for me to process what people are saying to me. Sometimes it's like Charlie Brown's teacher: "Wah-Wah-Wah-Wah." Say What? I heard the voice, but can't comprehend what they said.
