I'm not sure if its "South" african or just African but I have so much african music its crazy. Just got a new DVD on Yousso N'Dour, LOVE Miariam Makeba,(such a rich pure voice) Baketi Kumalo, and of course Ladysmith Black Mambazo. And lots of otheres that I can't spell theior names from memory. Love the song "Lango Ma" I think its called but can't remember who sings it. And both my children can sign in African. I only wish we knew what we were signing. I think NKosi Sekelele (definately spelled wrong) is the most beautiful National Anthem I'v ever heard.
I must have an "African Soul" because I am completely enamored by the country and its people. I also donate to have water pumps given to families in Africa so they can irrigate their crops and send their children to school. _________________ Did I dream this belief, or did I believe this dream?

It's a continent, first of all.
And yes I love African music too, have you heard Desert Rose a duet by Sting and Cheb Mami (Algerian?)
Or Rokia Traore of Mali? Perhaps you know Thandiswa and Dilom Kids of South Africa, listen to Karen Zoid for some wonderful Afrikaans music (she sings in English too)
Miriam Makeba is amazing, ever heard Qongqothwane (and yes, I can prononuce it, q clicks in Xhosa are put your tongue on the bottom of your jaw)
and it dosen't have to be South Africa, it's just the one of the 53 countries, I also am obessesd with Malawi, Mali, Namibia and Zambia too.....

Hi there, people.
Bozewani, we've met before.
Yes, I have been obsessed with South Africa since the late eighties. So it's pretty bad When it all started, I was about the same age as you, Bozewani. So it's very interesting to find another SA geek!
Now South Africa is my second home; there is no other society in the world but my own (the Dutch) and the South African one that I know more about, and where I feel more at home and at ease.
This SA obsession is quite intense: even after 20 years I still catch myself changing the topic of many a discussion into a topic about South Africa. Like last night. "Oh, in South Africa this also happens." Or: "Yes, materialism has also always been a South African phenomenon.", etc. (and then I think to myself: "Stop it!")
I must say that fate wasn't easy on me and my obsession: everything that could possibly foster it, has occurred. When I had already developed this keen interest, my father married a normal Dutch woman, but... she has South African connections. She has nieces, nephews and their offspring in South Africa. Now the South African relatives see me far more often than they see her (her first and last time in SA was around 1971). I have stayed with them in SA many times, some of them even came living here for a while and I feel excellent when I'm with them. For example: I've visited them three times in the last three years. What's more; I'm Dutch and the Dutch are closely related to the Afrikaner nation, and their language derives from Dutch dialects.
Now South Africa is everywhere: I have a lot of SA friends, a web-site about it, I am active in the Afrikaans language movement, at home I grow a lot of indigenous plants that I got from slips and seeds from the farm where I normally stay, I write about SA, read about it, I'm about to teach Afrikaans to Dutch speakers, I will graduate at university on a South African subject, etc., etc.
Karen Zoid is great, isn't she? Nianell is also a good singer. And Anton Goosen.

I don't fancy visiting a country where the rape rates are the highest in the world. Apparently many white South Africans are talking of jumping ship. Many go to Australia.

Neither do I. I must say that you got a good dilemma there. In spite of all the utopian social engineering and liberalism into which this country had been immersed as from the early nineties, no overall improvement can be seen. Well, now people have freedom of speech, maybe that is the improvement that is still able to overshadow the negative effects of democratisation. People were just very naive.
Hundreds of thousands of South Africans are fleeing to commonwealth countries. I can imagine English speaking people moving there, but apparently Afrikaans people also move to London, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. I'd rather see them move to the Dutch and German speaking countries of their forebears.
It is a sad story. The Afrikaner nation is not too big (3 million) and I was told that one fifth has already left the country. Many more are yet to follow. On top of that you have the farm murders, where groups of young men have been killing over 2000 Afrikaans farmers and their families, on their isolated farms. The sadistic fashion in which this murdering takes place (after raping the wives while the husband has to see what happens, there is torturing, etc.), gives everyone the impression that this is an ethnic battle, and not one of materialism or of theft or robbery, as the ANC wants people to believe.
And still, I like the country, although I see the suppressed fear and sadness in people's eyes. It's weird. I think there're too many good things about the people themelves, to forget about the country altogether. Maybe it's nostalgia that keeps me going.

Now, this is a thread for all who are (like me) obsessed with South Africa
Southafricaphila? OMG you get turned on by South Africa. I have Spokanephila and Benny & Joonphila. _________________ Aspergers, PDD-NOS, autistic, who cares what diagnoses I have, it's just a label. All on the spectrum.
I love a South African accent, unfortunately almost every South African guy I've met I have not got on with. Girls/women are fine, but I've only met one guy who hasn't been ... unpleasant - and he was like 85 or something. No 'fence to any SA males, I've only met three (that I can think of)! (Yeah, I live in the middle of nowhere...) Thing is, most SA women I've met have been lovely and I've really got on well with them. It's a bit strange.
I have a Simpsonphilia, a South Parkphilia, and a Seattlephilia, among others. _________________ When you need something, that's a responsibility, that only an adult...of my maturity...Bunnies!!!
