...to something that sounds more polite, what would it be?
Even though I don't think the DSM criteria are fair, I think it a better label would be "Well-Functioning Autism," or "High-Functioning Autism" (with "High-Functioning Autism with Verbal Delay" for the old criteria). |

I think "social dyslexia" and "the cat syndrome" are great suggestions. _________________ "The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it."--H. L. Mencken |

Remove it.
From the lady who brought the label to life: | Quote: | | "Asperger syndrome and high-functioning autism are not distinct conditions" (1998, p. 23). |
The "HFA" she is referring to is Kanner's Autism without a comorbid diagnosis of mental retardation. Yes, she just said Kanner's and Asperger's are no different. As Gillberg will tell you, it's possible to be "severely autistic" without mental retardation, or to have "mild autism" with mental retardation. The latter will gain a "LFA" label, even though the Autism part isn't as severe as the former, who'll be dubbed "HFA".

Before I found out about asperger's, it was obvious to me that I had something along those lines, although I didn't know what it was, and I didn't put together the correlation with obsessive interests and unusual sensory issues.
I called it "Repulsive Personality Syndrome." _________________ Folks said

HFA without speech delay
Or, a little different:
HFA with normal speech development
It must be something that captures the triad of impairments and not just the social interaction part, I think. _________________ The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it. Terry Pratchett |

Autism. I don't like "cat syndrome". Not sure about social dyslexia. Is it accurate? Socially befuddled would be fun to see in the DSM.
Spudnik, you're back! And I finally get that killer bunny thing (Spamalot's in town right now). |

| High-functioning Autism seems the most descriptive. It's autism, but at a higher functioning level. I never use Asperger's or PDD-NOS when describing myself, I always use HFA. |
