How much of what we read in Bible remains true to the literal Word of God? As spoken to the prophets and writers of Scripture? How to separate the social climate of the gospel-writer's day from the content of Scripture itself?

Some of it is, dare I say it, the actual Word of God transmitted to human beings.

I for one take it as a given that this Message did not survive the transmission in its pristine word-for-word form. Given the infinite transcendental nature of the sender (God) versus the finite mundane nature of the receiver (mankind), the margins for error are staggering. But somehow we've come across all these millennia with a Book that is some echo of the original cosmos-creating Word.

Where the Bible sees to advocate ugly things like slavery, racism, and misogyny, I prefer to attribute that to human culture and not to God Himself. I cannot believe that God Himself delights in slavery, racism, misogyny, incest, etc. I would much sooner chalk thsat up to the influence of the mortal men who penned the documents which now constitute the Bible.

Who has a comment or opinion on this? Please, no flamers, haters, or trolls.

I would say the anti-discrimination law concerning equal opportunity would cover this thread.

'No person shall be discriminated against on the grounds of religion, race, sexual orientation or disability.'

Religion covers all beliefs, not just Christians. Even atheists, as well as Buddhists, Hindus, Taoists, Muslims, Jews, Shintoists, Sikhs, Flying Spaghetti monster believers are entitled to their opinion under the Act.

There is no such thing as the literal Word of God. God does not speak to us in words. God's "Word" to us is not literally a word, or words. God's message to us is not literally "Word". The word "Word" for "Word of God" is figurative, not literal.

the "cult" is called pastafarianism.

Pastafarianists worship the flying spaghetti monster.

and the bible is a book of fiction.

Yes the Bible is 100% accurate, but often misinterpreted. I believe that there are also missing pieces that were deliberately cut out. Take Christ for example, the Bible chronicles His life from the time He was born and until the time He turned about 12. Then suddenly, He's 30 and about to get crucified.

Conspicuously missing was His mischievous teen years. What everyone wants to know is just how many of His school teachers got turned into goats? How many, if any, girls did He shag while floating in mid air? How come His girlfriend was a hooker? A lot of people blame the Catholic Church for withholding these books of the Bible.

Thats such a big question.

I take the Bible as written by humans with human failings but where, even with the social influences, personal preferences and failings, the word of God. and how those people experienced that still comes through.

It's true...how come we never hear anything of Jesus' teenage years, hmmmmm?

Like Jesus: The College Years where during every party, he came with one pizza and one six-pack and made enough for everyone? Or that year he was on the swim team, he did that trick where he walked on the water in that neat chicken dance routine? Or how he used to strut around the campus like his dad owned the whole place...

Jesus was a baby and then a man...weird.
