Does anybody find crossing the road difficult?
I find it so hard.
Normally I watch and cross at the same time as someone else.
When I'm with my mum which is most of the time I hold her finger/hand to get to the other side.
The other day there was hardly anyone in town and I ran away from art group and I was in such a state. I'd forgotten how hard I found it, I hadn't been on my own for so long.
I look one way, and then the other, but then the other way again, but then I don't know what is happening the other way. I have nearly been in serious accidents so many times.
Does anyone else find this hard? |

| I find crossing the road difficult, I’m very nervous at crossing and will wait by the side for a very long time if I can’t use a proper crossing. Sometimes I’m a bit too impulsive when crossing though as I’ve been hit by a car twice, not the same one I mean hit on two separate occassions. |

I find it hard too.
I solved the issue somewhat with two familiar roads by becoming reckless, which is essentially stupid. Like, I'll walk and... hope I got everything right. I wait until there are red lights somewhere nearby, so that the road is free of cars.
But I usually cross alongside with others too. And I can't cross roads on which cars are allowed to drive at the average city-speed without traffic lights.
If the car isn't close, I can't determine how fast it drives, how far away it is etc.
Sometimes I just cross. Forgetting about cars. That one is bad. _________________ The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it. Terry Pratchett |

I have huge difficulties crossing roads. I find it hard to judge distance and space and am very nervous crossing a busy road, in fact I will do anything to not have to cross a difficult road. My stress levels get very high around traffic and I panic. I cannot drive and am a very nervous passenger. Another thing I find difficult is navigating (as a pedestrian) around a carpark. In England car parks are very small and cramped and I find it difficult watching for reverse lights when people are pulling out and moving vehicles in general.

Wow... I thought I was the only one, who thinks that this is a big issue. I got into accidents 2 times while crossing the road (it was exactly the same road and exactly the same part of it, BTW), this is why I have scars near my left eye, on my forehead and on my chin. even if my life depended on it, I can not judge how far away a car is and how quick it is going. _________________ I am no native speaker. I used to be like that too, but taught myself to measure the speed and distance enough to feel confident about crossing the road. You can learn. _________________ "It is the wounded oyster that mends its shell with pearl" - Ralph Waldo Emerson |

Yes, although I don't always notice it's hard before people start screaming and/or yanking on me, and that's part of the problem. _________________ "We may seem in the gutter from up there where you are but maybe you don't know we still see the same stars." -Donna Williams |

I guess so, but I would not trust myself to act on that judging of situations. I normally wait until large parts of the road are free and if there is too much traffic for that use traffic lights (and normally follow those religiously even though that might be OCD). _________________ I am no native speaker. this is part of what am have, though the causes may be different to what others have wrote.
am have no concept of danger and poor awareness of surroundings when out,but am always have family or staff who use physical restraint to stop am going where they dont want.

do not find it is part of own asds routine?
am have a similar thing as well, but for am its just part of autie routine,am will only cross at the parts am always do,and if anyone tries to drag am before or after,it sets am off. _________________ [LFAutie]

I find judging the traffic hard to, especially when you are meant to look both ways and then remember how far away one car was previously.
The other thing I struggle with is remembering which lane goes which direction sometimes, although that might be panic, when there are two lanes going one way and another going the other way I get so confused.
I hate roads. |

| I find it difficult. I always misjudge the speed at which cars are moving and I overcompensate by waiting until there's no one anywhere near where I want to cross. Unless cars are stopped, of course. I very rarely jaywalk because I prefer having traffic lights to help me, and even then I get nervous. |

I find that the crossing signals (red light/green light) do not give pedestrians enough time to cross the road before they change. This is especially hard for someone with a disability, the elderly, and parents with small children who may be pushing a stroller or trying to get across with several slow walking toddlers in tow. The light changes when they are still in the middle of the street and the cars have a green signal and have little patience or concern for those on foot. An four-way intersection is especially threatening. In the city there is a pedestrian "go" and a vehicle "go" with very little time for the pedestrian to cross before the signal changes for the cars to go. Pedestrians are supposed to have the right-of-way, but that rule is not taken seriously by many drivers. _________________ I accept chaos. I am not sure whether it accepts me.
