this has been on my mind for a while. so okay, i actually like Resident Evil. i think it's a great series...but the older i've gotten the story quality has really not held up well. am i the only one who thinks so? the older i've gotten the more terrible the dialogue has seemed and the more common threads i've seen in every story.

Resident Evil - Master of unlocking, Jill Sandwich, need i say more? Also IMO the gameplay was the weakest in the series.

Resident Evil 2 - Better voice acting, but the lines are still terrible. Plus they repeat the whole "traitor-in-our-midst" plot point from the first game, and add an annoying little girl (Sherry) on top of it.

Resident Evil 3 - the lines aren't AS terrible, but any of Jill's attempts to sound either deep or bad-ass sound really lame. plus they repeat the "traitor-in-our-midst" crap AGAIN.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica - it seems every game needs at least one character who's a painfully annoying pillock, and Steve goes above and beyond to fulfill this role.

Resident Evil Zero - a prequel. and like most prequels it sets about answering questions no one asked leaving us more confused than we were before.

Resident Evil 4 - for most of the game you fight off an ancient mystical cult led by a mutated midget. at least this story seemed to KNOW it was terrible and didn't take itself as seriously as the others, which actually made it fun.

and they all end with a SELF-DESTRUCT SEQUENCE. couldn't they think of ANYTHING else?

your thoughts?

Well, yeah. When it was first released it was still unusual for a game to have any kind of significant plot and Capcom seems to have stuck with it out of a weird sense of tradition.

The new 20th anniversary issue of Nintendo Power has a top-20 game list for each Nintendo system. Resident Evil 4 is the number one Gamecube title on the list. It got it for the graphics and not the story though.

If it was up to me I would have made "Super Mario Sunshine" number one instead of number six.

Don't forget RE: Zero which was meant to clarify the plot and only made it even more confusing.

--Umbrella develops a virus for transforming people into supermen, the only side effect being cat eyes. But apparently, they just kind of forget about that one and focused on viruses that create zombies or giant vagina dentata monsters.

--Rebecca finds out that Wesker is a traitor, but won't bother telling anyone she meets in RE1.

--The founder of Umbrella is betrayed, killed and resurrected by mutant leeches who de-age him, make him look like a Final Fantasy villain and let him command leeches through his singing.

And it had Giant Mecha Salazar!

The bad guy's plan kind of made sense--kidnap the daughter of the President, and infect her with a mind controlling parasite that you can give orders to. Let her get rescued, then use her to get to the President.

But he kind of blows that by a) Telling Ashley and her rescuer exactly what his plan is and b) Trying to kill them both at every chance he gets.

Uh...it's a videogame Wink

Unless it's a Looking Glass game, I'm not going to expect any epic storytelling.

And in the case of the first RE, sometimes things can get pretty messy when you have to translate from one language to another @_@

Voice acting in it isn't that bad, though...you should try out House of the Dead 2 Shocked Makes me laugh every time ;D

Sure thing. I wasn't criticising you for leaving it out or anything.

no no i knew you weren't. it's just a funny comment and i felt it summed it up thusly. i completely ignored RE: Zero by accident anyway (knew i was forgetting something) so it worked out perfectly.

The story's terrible, I agree. I really wish this wasn't the level of storytelling common in games. The Silent Hill games have a pretty confusing story too. But the worst for sheer continuity is of course the Zelda series.

The storyline is bad but I think it also enchances the b-movie feel in Resident evils. Zombie movies don't generally have good plots either and that's where Capcom took their influences from.

I'm glad they haven't used live actors after the first game, though. The intro is just embarassing to watch, it looks like a high school project at best.

I'm a pretty big fan of B-movies, so I loved the intro Embarassed And it's especially satisfying considering how terrible CGI cutscenes looked back then.

Hard to watch the censored version though, they cut out like 50% of it Mad
