I want to start my own business, but am afraid that my AS will get in the way. here are a few areas that concern me.
1. Organization skills are lacking. I get overwhelmed and just walk away until I can handle it again. I always comeback, but I can't do that when I am working with a customer.
2. COnfidence. I have a major fear of failure. What if I don't make it? What if I don't have what it tales to succeed?
3. Attention. I have a great mind and I am so creative, but I have a preoblem with jumping around from one thing to another. I will make my way back around the circle to where I started, but it is a habit. Is this an organization thing?
I want to start my own business because I cannot stand the confines of a structured workplace. I have a great field and I am exceptionally good in it. I do it most of the timeright now and should get paid for it. How can I get past this so I can fullfill my dream? |

I have just started my own business after working for other people for 11 years. I can relate to what you are saying as I feared the same things. Here is an example;
After one session on a Monday (I'm a PT) my client wanted to purchase a 5 pack of sessions, and wanted to commence on a Thursday. I was confused as in my mind (which assumes order) you start a 5 pack on a Monday. Now, this momentary lapse of reason on my part came across as I had no clue what I was doing. I'm sure my client thought I was mad. I also have to think out loud so talking to myself was also probably looking bad. Normallly I would have to take my problem to work out away from others, and then its sorted in seconds, I find it hard to think in front of others. However when you run your own business you have to be able think quickly.
After this slight embarrassment I asked a friend for advice; she told me to say to the client in future if this happens something along the lines of 'excuse me, I'm just having a brain freeze', and laugh it off. There is nothing wrong with coming across as a little scattered if you can laugh at yourself, and also if you are great in your field. I think people will forgive these little indiscretions if they see what great things you have to offer. Also, don't be afraid if someone rings you and asks a question you can't answer on the spot to say 'I'm just with a client (or whatever) can I get back to you etc'. Then you can sort the matter out on your own and have a clear mind when you phone them back.
So far my business is going well, there are times I struggle as I don't like conversation but I have music playing in the backgroud. I also make up for the lack of social chit chat by explaining the technical side of what I am doing to the client. I will never come accross as an outgoing trainer, however I know that I have served my client well in other areas.
My advice is to go for it, and accept yourself for who you are.
Hope this helps. |

| I am wanted to be a sustainable living coach kind of paired with an eco friendly realtor. I have had my real estate license for a while and I love doing it. I wanted a niche and I think this could be mine. I am always getting asked questions about how to save energy and grow your own food, since I do it myself, and I thought "well, people get paid good money for it." My very wealthy uncle was the first to suggest it becaus he is doing a rehab and wants to be sustainable in the process. I have done a great bit of research for him. He lives too far for me to get paid for it, as I need to be present to oversee, but it got me thinking and I have been looking for something I was good at. Where do I find helpfrom coaches? I looked into the local career central and they had no suggestions. A coach is one thing, but how do you get past the selfconciousness of failure? |

| You could try to find a class at community college in entrepreneurship - they might teach you some organization tools, and you can network with the teacher to try to find someone who might help. Or contact the local chamber of commerce - they may have tools for entrepreneurs and even might know someone who is an entrepreneur coach. You might also want to see if your local community access cable channel has a show devoted to small business - they may profile local businesspeople, describe tools that have worked for them, and may give local resources (plus, often, the host of the show may have a side business as a self-employment coach). This is where networking can help a lot, if you're into that kind of thing. |

There is only one way to get over this - go for it!
If you don't try you will never find out - and probably regret it.
I would suggest speaking to a number of people beforehand who can advise and putting together a comprehensive plan. This should bolster your confidence.
Also, things slowly and build up slowly. Don't bite off more than you can chew in the short term as it will be stress inducing. You can afford to take a long view.

I appreciate the feedback and I agree that I am going to have to bite the bullet and go foward.
Here are the two obstacles that I desperately need to overcome. If you have suggestions it would be fabulous!!
1. I am passionate about what life I want. The problem is that I live on full throttle all the time. I am into what I am doing and I am good at it. Unfortunately, the passion dies off occasionally (as it does for anyone). When it lessens, I find that I cannot even see the path anymore as if it dissappeared and I start searching for an alternative. When I finally find something, I realize it isn't what I want and I revive the passion I had for the real desire. I can't seem to maintain the road and wait it out, trudge along as it were, to wait for the passion to resurface (and I know it will). I don't even recognized that I did this until the whole cycle completes. I'm not sure if it an attention span thing or the inability to keep my eye on the ball for lack of something tangible. It isn't perfect all the time and there will always be something more to learn, but when these two things come up in particular, I find that I wander away. I hate not knowing all there is to know because then I think that I am not qualified. I know you need to grow all the time to be successful, but when I don't know something, it is as if I never knew anything.
2. I try and try to schedule myself. I am sooooooooo forgetful and I KNOW that I need to write things down and have alarms on my phone etc.. so that I can get to things on time. In owning your own business you have to be able to change things up as they come along. It is even more necessary for me if I am going to do this and continue to homeschool my kids. It can bedone, but the know-how eludes me. I find that I have not been able to successfully complete a week without forgetting at least 2 appointments. Today, as an example, the kids had something at the church. I had it on the massive calender in the kitchen as well as alarmed in my phone, but I forgot to go because when my alarm went off I stopped it and the kids distracted me by fighting. The alarm was set for 15 minutes before the event and I didn't realize that I missed it until a half hour before it ended. A 3 minute quarrel between a few kids killed the thing that we were waiting all week for. I forgot that easily. I am afraid that I will not be able to serve my customers in the way I need to. I know we can't be everything to everyone, but I also know that business is all about word of mouth. I can think of a few choice words that would fit if I forgot an appointment with a client! I need so many and constant visual reminders to get from point A to point B. Is there something else I can do? I feel hopelessly lost.
Thanks in advance and I really look foward to your responses. |

It sounds like you need some "tools" to help you stay organized. If your a computer person and the job is on the computer then a program would be good. If not, then a good planner is needed and make sure you write everything down in it. Monthly, weekly, daily, get in the habit of checking it every day and through out the day. Mark things off as they get done. Good planners have a to do list, calenders, phone book section but be consistant.
Join the local Chamber of Commerce and get to know other business owners. A lot of success is who you know. People tend to refer others by word of mouth.
Use two alarms. One for the initial reminder and one for 10 mins later as a backup reminder.
Good luck. _________________ No matter what your age, you don't need to change the world to find love, sometimes all that has to change is you. Be open to the possibilities. |

An aspi join a chamber of commerce?
Keep a folded sheet of paper in ur pocket of all neartime things to do. Don't be a slave to it though, practice recall from memory. I too have memory problems (and sometimes chronic indecision) - tho if its something I really enjoy then I'm red hot - no problem.
I'm great with strangers or occasional customers, its people have to see daily I struggle with. Suffered eight years in someone elses factory, had to get out - was severely depressed. No help from anyone. That was 25 years ago. I survive now on a three day week in my business and two days cash gardening. |
