I had the worst panic-attack I've ever had in my entire life today. So much insane crap happened all at once and my body (and mind) just couldn't handle it. When the panic-attack started happening, my heart started to feel like there were sharp needles poking through it. After this my throat became completely dry and I could hardly breathe. When the panic attack started to go away my head started to hurt and I developed a migraine headache.

It's been around 10 hours since I had the panic attack now, but I can STILL feel it's effects. My heart still hurts a lot and I feel dizzy and disoriented.

I just thought I'd share that awful experience with you.

Has anyone here had any serious panic attacks before? This is the first major panic attack I've experienced in my life.

Yes, I do know. Not to be presumptuous, but you described a meltdown, which is different from a panic attack. It's scary! I am highly meltdown prone - you've had meltdowns before, yes?
In any case, I'm sorrry - hope you feel better soon. Usually after I rest a while I'm ok. Can you put an ice pack under your head? This does help.

I was averaging 10+ severe panic attacks per day, for years, from PTSD and social inability, and I turned to alcohol and drug abuse to self-medicate. I don't recommend that you do that. If it becomes a problem, I recommend that you seek some type of legal medication. Some are very effective but, keep in mind that you will, most likely, be sedated. If the panic attacks become frequent and intense, the trade-off may be worth it. It was, for me. Although I'm still on meds, I've taught myself that the attacks are irrational, and are not physically harmful. This info. made my life much easier. Perhap you will be able to realize this for your situation. Best of luck. Smile

Panic attacks are definitely a very scary experience. I have Panic Disorder so I'm very familiar with what you experienced. They really do drain the life out of you, but you will feel better again soon. The best thing I can tell you is that as scary as they are they are just feelings and sensations and nothing that can really hurt. Your brain was just going on overdrive for no reason. As someone suggested before if you do find that you do experience more panic attacks talking to a doctor about it maybe a good idea. I hope you feel better soon. Smile

So, why "Love and Dating?" Was it a romantic experience that percipitated the panic attack?

I've had a couple of panic attacks. Have managed to reason my way out of it. Now I just have meltdowns. My headaches started after my first panic attack a few years ago, and I still get them most days.

I've gotten mild panic attacks, even at the age of 13. So I know how it feels. Hope you get better soon! Smile

I went though hell with Panic attacks. I could be left in a state of anxiety for over a week sometimes. I found the meds I went on and reading up on Panic Attacks helped. Its not understanding a Panic Attack that makes it worse.

When you said your panic attack was followed by a migrane, it made me wonder if you were dehydrated. I looked up the web and found this site.. above.

It seems hyperventilation is a symptom of dehydration.

A migrane can be caused by dehydration, due to excessive constriction of the blood vessels in the brain.

Lower salt intake and increase water intake.

Hope this is helpful. Panic attacks are no fun!

how do you deal with them in the lab, labpet?

i find it hard sometimes cause there are now lots of people in our lab all the time and i know i have made mental notes of all the nearest exit doors to where i can just go sit in some secluded back corner of the building... that's about my best preventative or appropriate setting to have one quietly and as quickly as possible.
