Covering isn't always about improving a song but can also be about paying tribute to perfection. Or paying tribute to a band that means a lot to you.
But I agree some classics should be left untouched. Weirdly enough, if I look at my top20 all time favourite songs only a minority has been covered while the list would contain a few covers itself (as far as you can consider folk music a cover) _________________ Keep it flaming your desire, always rising high, aim for stars and hit the sky!

Take on Me. A1's version of this classic sucks! _________________ "The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it."--H. L. Mencken
Haha. When a friend tried to tell me about that piece I didn't believe him.
I still find it hilarious that it is taken so seriously by an intelligent audience.
I think it's great, honestly. A concert audience is ideally supposed to remain totally silent, but 4'33" demonstrated the futility of this. The musicians are silent, it's the audience that's making the most noise. Of course, outside that particular context I don't really see the point.
- anybody who covers Teen Spirit
- anybody who covers Creep
- anybody who covers Stairway to Heaven
- anybody who covers Don't Fear the Reaper (surprising amount have. they all suck)
- any cover Sheryl Crow ever did (that Guns N' Roses cover was super lame)
- come to think of it, any cover Guns N' Roses did
- any cover Britney Spears ever did
- any cover Limp Bizkit ever did (Behind Blue Eyes sticks out. not only was it a horrible cover, but they spelled Pete Townshend's name WRONG in the credits. insult to injury)
- any rock band that covers a lame pop song in an attempt to muscle it up while at the same time seeming hip and ironic
- any pop start that covers an awesome rock song in a lame attempt to seem edgy (see Britney)
- any song from that Tori Amos covers album (i love her but that album was just weird)
- ...f***ing hell JUST DON'T DO COVERS. f**k UP YOUR OWN SONGS, NOT SOMEBODY ELSES. _________________ OH GOODIE!.net

I tend to think anything written by The Smiths should not be covered (see Placebo's cover of 'Bigmouth Strikes Again' for evidence of this). _________________ Your establishment... I do not recommend it.

I am a big Smiths fan myself, but I sort of liked TATU's version of How Soon Is Now. OK, still bad compared to the original but then nobody could ever do better than Saint Morrissey. But the cover was not that bad really.
As for Nirvana: I don't understand the way everyone rates Smells... such a great song. I always found Nirvana quite overrated. Belgian "Pop Idols" candidate Peter Evrard once did a very good cover of Lithium. Honestly, he was better than Cobain. And that was Pop Idols... I never liked Nirvana, but to each his own.
Oh yes, one thing: Bela Lugosi's Dead, the ultimate goth anthem.... Covered by many bands hoping to attract a goth fanbase that way. I never heard one decent cover. Bauhaus should start court cases against anyone daring to touch that song _________________ Keep it flaming your desire, always rising high, aim for stars and hit the sky!

Disagree. Their cover of 'Faith' but a dangerous edge on a song otherwise just about sex and such, and I liked that. I'm also the only person on earth aside from Fred Durst who likes their amalgamation of 'Bittersweet Symphony' and 'Home Sweet Home.'
No-one should cover The Smiths, Morrissey's vocals are too unique.
No-one should cover 'A Day In The Life.'
'Love Will Tear Us Apart'
I am not entirely opposed to covers, although I don't like doing them myself. I think if you do them properly, you can pay tribute to the original and put your own spin on it without detracting from it.

I don't think anybody should have covered Rihanna's "Umbrella". They all try to sing it slowly and more meaningfully, but singing "umbrella-ella-ella-ay-ay-ay" in your most dramatic voice just doesn't work. At all.
Also, nobody should have covered Marc Cohn's "Walking in Memphis". Nobody did it better than he did.
There are a couple of cover songs that I do enjoy, however. I think that "Poison" and "Moonlight Shadow" sounded a lot better when Groove Coverage covered them. I also like the Dixie Chicks' cover of "Landslide", if only for the fact that it's so upbeat that it doesn't make me want to cry like the original does.
