In real life. Besides yourself. B/c on some topics, people make general assumptions...

So just curious what these generalizations are based on, if you only know yourself to be on the spectrum in real life...and if what other things you know of the spectrum are from the virtual world/media/TV/forums/books etc..

When I generalize, I draw my knowledge from myself, my father and the Aspies I know from WP, plus articles I've read on Asperger's. I don't know anyone else who is an Aspie in real life.

My relatives have aspie traits too, and I used to work with a guy who was HFA, who actually the first person to say I was probably aspie. (still don't know for sure)

I've met nine people who I know to be diagnosed aspies and a few more that seem like they have it. I know two of them well, they used to be in the same class in elementary school. The rest are just acquaintaces.

I have known 2, maybe 3. My dad, my nephew, and I now suspect my cousin is to some degree. I don't think he quite has AS but I think he is somewhere in the spectrum.

I know two diagnosed aspies. One of them was my classmate throughout school, and the other is a friend of a friend of a friend's friend. There is another person who was in my year who I suspect is on the spectrum somewhere...she has crazy obsessions, has never fit in and is uncoordinated but I don't think she has any sensory issues.

I don't know anyone else in real life who has Asperger's, but I do know someone who is autistic.

Offline? Many, to varying degrees of knowing well vs. knowing casually. "Many" meaning I can't even count how many, probably at least over a hundred if not more like over two or three hundred.

Family.
People from school (regular, special ed, and gifted).
People from neighborhoods, past and present.
People from assorted forms of mental institutions.
People from day programs.
People from agencies who served me.
Children of people I knew.
People I met through non-autism-related events, who happened to be other auties with similar interests.
People I met because they decided they wanted to meet me.
People I met in other random ways.
People I met through support groups (either for autistic people or for parents).
People I met through autism conferences.
...etc.

Basically people from a lot of situations with a lot of different backgrounds, experiences, etc. People officially labeled with AS, autism, Rett, PDD-NOS, etc., as well as with no official label or with psych labels instead. Knowing so many is why when people say that no autistic person can do such-and-such a thing, I almost always know plenty of exceptions. Smile

And I know far more people over the Internet, because there are just so many autistic people out there online.

Which, while it selects for people who can type or have access to alternative computer access methods, doesn't mean I don't know them. And there is quite a wide variety of experiences on the Internet if you happen to take a look. I hate how people assume that all autistic people online are the same, and then proceed to make statements about those online that at most exclude lots of online autistic people or at the very least extremely alienate us.
