| My son has autism (ausburgers) and he talks to himself alot. It's extremely frustrating because I can't seem to find a way to break him of it unless I'm sitting with him at all times because that's the only time it seems he doesn't do it as much. He also makes comments like "your not a donut" or "your not a mustastashed twinkie" or other nonsense (I am not making this up, these are actual statements he makes to me !) The problem is I am a comedian myself, meaning I am the kind of father, husband and person that has a very strong sense of humor and I like to make my wife, her children and my own laugh and I need to know if this is self stem and if there is something I can do to stop him from talking "nonsense" and help him distinguish what is appropriate and what isn't. |

I talk to myself all the time. Usually I wait till im alone to do it. People seem to think your crazy if you do it in public. Its not a bad thing, well at least I do it alot and im sane. At least I think I am sane, how would you know if your not?
In anycase, you cant stop him from talking to himself, thats like asking him to stop thinking. Just tell him that many people think its innapropriate and he shouldnt do it in public. He just needs to keep his thoughts inside his head which will come with practice. Though if he does talk aloud at home, dont make a big deal of it.
And also, if he refers to himself as 'we' when talking to himself and seems to argue with himself, thats normal. I do it all the time, and Im not crazy. |

I talk to myself a lot but I've never made funny statements like that. I usually do it when I'm alone like driving, but when I go shopping I sometimes talk to myself which product is better. I usually have a dialog in my head with myself, I assume this is normal with people with AS. _________________ The breaking of a wave cannot explain the whole sea. |

| I often talk to myself, especially when I am working through something hard or I am trying to remember what I just forgot. Is that a problem? I haven't been put away yet. Your son makes dumb jokes because he is still figuring out the rules of language and humor. |

I was talking to myself while shopping for some items. I verbalized while going down my list. A stranger commented (probably sarcastically) about how I must be doing that to have someone smart to talk to. I didn't say anything, but thought "well no, I'm not the smartest person I know, but at least I'm easy to talk to." _________________ You should get to know me better. How old is your son? I have a 6 year old, yet to be diagnosed. He talks to himself and makes up his own words. He used to call eveyone a mint...."You Mint". He also makes up Knock Knock jokes that are only funny to him and he is the king of sound effects .
I also talk to myself....in my head....but I use hand gestures |

I hate to say it, but I talk to myself sometimes also, and some things come out in such a way that they could sound like nonsense. Then again, I speak a few languages and might speak in any of them.
It is very telling that he DOESN'T speak to himself in public. It is MYTH that it is a sign of mental disease, etc... ALSO, apparently, this kind of thing is relatively common with AS. It can be like Echolalia in a way.
And don't think I do it all the time, or mindlessly, because I don't. Your son probably doesn't either. Freud even mentioned how a thought can be partially vocalized. He viewed it as a common thing that can occur under stress, when tired, or overworked. Since such a thing can stem from an internal idea that you may not want to expose, it became known as a freudian slip. |

I talk to myself all the time. I have a hard time trying to control it, especially in public, but I do it it myself a lot when I am in my home. It really frustrates both my parents, and they all tell me to quite talking to myself. I say odd things, but this is normal in someone with asperger's. _________________ Though there's no one there to guide you

I do it a lot too, when I'm alone. Occasionally, I do it when someone happens to be there. They'll say something to me about it, which I don't like. I look at it as thinking out loud, but others don't see it that way.
I've seen non-aspies do it occasionally. It's normal. Nothing wrong with it at all. |

For the longest time I have said that I talk to myself because I am the only one who listens.
Actually I think that's how my left and right brain communicate. The left brain is a serial
processor while the right brain is a massively parallel processor. Jill Bolte Taylor did a
lecture on a major stroke she had some years ago. This video was recorded in May
2008. It's a PhD level discussion but is fascinating on several levels. I have been really
chewing on this since I first saw the video, and I think that it's relevant:

Enjoy,
Jeffrey
PS: Ever wanted to see an actual human brain up close? She has one w/ spinal cord attached! |

| I talk to myself all the time but not in public because that means people will think you are schizophrenic and talking to your voices. |
