I only recently heard some music of them. The name was familiar with me for many years but I somehow never reached the point of checking them out, until recently when a local DJ played Pet Sematary and the KKK song. I liked it a lot and started listening to more stuff of them, and so far I really enjoy it.
What are your opinions on them? And what songs should you recommend me (who is a newbie when it comes to Ramones discography) to definitely check out for a starter? _________________ Keep it flaming your desire, always rising high, aim for stars and hit the sky!

Go to youtube. They've got just about anything made by anybody. This is how I explored my musical interests. _________________ You should get to know me better. No one's ever what they seem.-- Shirley Manson
The Ramones are one of my favorite bands ever, so I am coming out of hiding to post on this thread!
Most people agree that their first two records are the best.
1. Ramones
2. Leave Home
I and many other Ramones fans agree that everything up to or through Pleasant Dreams is worth owning, including the Rock and Roll High School soundtrack (and the movie itself) and all those live records that have been coming out recently featuring different shows from the 70's.
3. Rocket to Russia
4. Road to Ruin
5. End of the Century
6. Pleasant Dreams
After that, everything is of questionable quality, usually for die-hard Ramones fans and people who don't know any better because they have not been fortunate enough to be exposed to good music.
I would not recommend bothering with any of the compilations ("best of" stuff) because you'll get the most radio-friendly material from the early records, which is not necessarily the best, and songs from the later records, which are certainly of questionable quality.
If I were you, I would start with one or both of the first records and go chronologically from there if you like them. You can't go wrong with owning a Ramones record or two. Even if you decide you don't like them, they're extremely important to music history - they'll help you understand where all the more recent bands are coming from, if that makes sense.

I second this, but with a band with as long and varied a history as The Ramones, it's important to know what to look for so you don't just see the stuff of lesser quality and get the wrong impression.
On YouTube, look up anything from the 70's and any songs off the first 2 or 3 records.
JohnHopkins In no way offensive to anybody. Honest.

I've never listened to them in depth, though I plan to eventually, but I know that they have been a gigantic influence on music, including on a good deal of the artists who are my key influences.
Conversely, one of my biggest hates in this world - people who wear Ramones t-shirts but don't listen to the Ramones.
Allegedly, Sylar (the bad guy in Heroes) wore a Ramones t-shirt a lot in the earlier episodes, but they didn't want the name of the Ramones associated with a serial killer so he had to stop wearing it.
That's my interesting fact of the day. *wanders off*

There are some great compilations out there that have 30+ songs on them. I bought 'Mania' in Germany and it has just about everything. _________________ Imagine a world in which, the Armies and Navies were all buck naked.

I started out with Mania. My personal opinion is that it does not represent their best songs, although it does provide a decent over-view of their catalog. I like the first 2 records best.

Indeed. Thanks, Hot Topic! (TM)
Fun fact- "53rd and 3rd" is a song DeeDee wrote about prostituting himself. The song title is his "corner." It's one of those songs that gets stuck in your head though.
"Sheena is a punk rocker" and "I wanna be sedated" are my two favorites though, and I also particularly like "Rockaway Beach."
