| I was curious if this issue was related to AS. I have trouble making up my bed (it's about getting the sheets on the mattress not the other sheets etc.) While reading another topic the issue of doing simple tasks came up and was curious is this AS based? Thanks fellow WP members. |

Yes. I will usually ask for help if I need it.
I have a hard time with my bed too. It is never made and it drives my Mom nuts. And I am 26.
Sometimes I can barely get myself dressed. |

Not especially. I can do most simple things with ease. My hand writing is very poor and I've never been able to do cursive script.
Is this problem with simple tasks executive dysfunction? |

Yeah same hear about makeing the bad, I also have trouble with folding clothes, tieing knots and some other things. I often like to have exact instructions in what to do but that often does not work as I often have trouble following orders. _________________ They're sinking cities with a GIANT WOOOOORM!!!!

I do too, for things like washing and brushing my hair, stuff like that. I know how to do the actions in these cases, but it's really hard to translate that not only into starting, but into getting my arms and such to do what I need to do.
It's like things that are automatic for most people doing these daily tasks, I have to put more deliberate thought into. So it usually takes me longer than most people (though as a child it was mostly chalked up to being female why I took so long getting ready, never mind that I don't use make-up or lotions or hair spray or things).
Other things, like laundry, fixing food, using new tools/machines, are difficult because not only the aforementioned difficulties, but it's difficult for me to figure out and/or remember the sequence of what I'm supposed to do.
My (aspie) dad, while not have the first problems I mentioned, does have this characteristic, though he doesn't have quite the difficulty that I do, which is why he told the people at his work who wanted to train him to use the cash register, that they have to be patient and not get frustrated with him. Both of us learn best by doing, not by listening to someone say how to do something. _________________ "Public transportation is for jerks and lesbians." --Homer Simpson

It can be related to AS. One common example "experts" use is the inability to dress oneself for school, and/or get it all organized to dress oneself (this is for AS); I slept in my school clothes, as there was no way I could get it all sorted out in the morning.
I have problems with making/preparing food; I can arrange my things in my room [that must remain in the way that I arranged them], clean, and whatnot. But, some "simple" things give me problems for reasons that are hard to explain. I like my bed left in the way when I got out of it, but I could make it if I didn't mind the change.
I'm advanced in some ways, however (I can pull relatively complicated mechanical objects apart, and put them back together without instruction with ease). |

Yeah, I remember when I was 14 and in a summer math program, and I was taking my mechanical pencil apart during class. I would've put it back together perfectly, except that I'd lost a small spring in the process, so it never worked properly again and I had to get a new one, which I promptly took apart and put back together again. _________________ "Public transportation is for jerks and lesbians." --Homer Simpson

I like to figure things out myself, I observe, the I attempt to do it once I think I understand it in my head. But I seem to have a problem at times of often haveing an incorect observation, but at least I am learning. I tend to have a big problem in figuring out manual tasks, but I gues in a way I pull things apart and put them back again but not usualy in the normal way. Instead I might pull apart a pattern or what I perseve as a patern and then see if I can put it back together. _________________ They're sinking cities with a GIANT WOOOOORM!!!!

I had some trouble as a kid, with my bed, and hair (it was long, HATED that), and folding clothes. What bothered me most was the time and effort compared to what was actually done. Took so much time, just to do what exactly? The reward vs. effort was the irritating part for me. _________________ Still grateful.

| Ya!! I mention this to someone on IM and they said no I'm not mentally retarded LOL! (or something to that effect) I was shocked! Glad I'm not the only one and while people might be able to do there bed cook etc. they are stressed by writing research papers while I could get one done in 24hrs. SO HA THERE! (Is how I feel in my mind.) LOL! |

I'm lucky in that I have a wife who does all those things... Seriously, I haven't had that much trouble, unless someone's in my face, distracting me. |

yes AS often get distracted by their own thoughts.
there are also difficulties with executive functioning leading to inertia...you look at something and think...oh..sh*t how do i do this.
unless one has rote learned or practiced often a skill process it is easy to get stuck on the simplest of tasks, and yes it is AS related often looks like adhd, and often misdiagnosed by those who seek to diagnose it. _________________ a great civilisation cannot be conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within- W. I have to seriously plan my household chores, like cleaning etc. It also takes more time than a normal person. I can keep my house clean... but I am seriously considering hiring a cleaner for certain tasks.
Some tasks demand a lot of concentration, like ironing cloths. |
