Curious to know about how AS people do with driving? Have you gotten a license? What were the issues involved in you either learning or not learning to drive? I'm asking because my 18yo son wants to drive, but is very anxious about it and very seldom wants to go out for lessons.

I have gotten my license a few weeks ago. Sinc then, I have given a large number of favours to family members who want me to transport people/goods back and forth, from home to the CBD and back again. Still, it is good because it seems that I have more independance, and this goes well beyond the driver's seat.

I don't have my liscence yet. Sadly... but I should be getting it sometime in January or February, as soon as I finish my college applications and after finals. Smile

I am 18, in college, and I don't drive. I never even went to get my permit. Unlike your son, I don't really have any desire to drive, and am nervous about it a bit. Of course, to be able to function in life I should learn how eventually.

I don't think that helped you much, aspiedad2. If you could be a little more specific, I might be able to answer some of your questions. Smile

I have my license but I haven't driven in like over a year. All I ever used it for was getting to and from school my Junior year of High school. But my senior year, my GPA was too low to get a parking permit at school.

First off, there seems to be some sort of developmental delay in some AS people that can affect coordination and/or visual processing while driving, so a few have to wait until their early '20s to get a license. Personally, I just got my license in April (at 23) because it took about 5 years to get the money for a car with some contol modifcations for cerebral palsy. Your son's fears are well founded, and can serve him well not to do anything stupid. If you can get him behind the weel for practice, just take it slow with him, like maby take him out to someplace abandoned to start and work his way up to a empty residential street late at night. He could then work his way up into heavier and heavier traffic and eventually the freway. Don't count on him ever really getting confident with being in heavy traffic, but he should eventually cope okay. Smile If he plans on living anywhere other than New York or Chcago, your son is going to need a car and license to make anything of himself.

I'm 22 (23 in March) and I will get my license in a few more weeks. But I did not consider getting lessons until late last year (I lived in inner city melbourne for until early 2003) and my dad will not teach me how to drive. I been paying an small fortune in driving lessons, initally I learn't in manual cars but was making little progress and abanonded driving lessons for several months, then I learn't a few lessons in the automatic and went back to learning in the manual

At my university, all you need is to be enrolled and pay a small fee and get a one year parking permit, which allows you to park in all the car parks and as long as you like.

Aspie Dad-
I just joined this site a couple days ago and I've read some of your posts. Are sons are so much alike! It seems you have all the same questions I do. My son is 15 though and he wants to get his permit. I just don't know what to do. I don't think he's ready. We are going to wait a while. I know your son is 18 though. Do you live in a big city? Or a rural area? I guess that would make a big difference. I don't think I would let Nick drive in a real busy area or big city, I think it would be overwhelming. Especially, at first. I think in the beginning I would only let him drive with me or his dad until he was ready to go on his own. That probably wouldn't be for a long time though-like 2 years or so (seriously). I definitely want to make sure he is safe.

Also, like your son, he likes to spend most of his time in his room. We are working on that. We try to get him to come out and be around the family more. But he seems angry and also doesn't treat his sister very well, she is 9.

If you ever want to talk you can pm me. It sounds like are boys are very similar. Smile

I have my permit right now. I love driving when my dad doesn't hog the wheel from me. It's just that we end up arguing over the wheel b/c he likes to "guide me" since he thinks I have no idea of what I'm doing (I actually know about the road better than he does...). I guess I'll wait a bit because of that, thanks.
