I had a beautiful cat since I was 8 years old. Her name was Esmeralda and she became more than a pet, she became a friend. Back in late May, we learned that she had developed breast cancer, which was common in her breed (she was a Siamese) and was terminal. A couple of months ago, her cancer got to the point where we had to have her euthanized. We even ordered her a stone, which has her name, the dates we've had her and the saying (from one of my favorite songs) "If only Angels could prevail, we'd be the way we were." I've been getting used to her being gone, but I still miss her.

That sucks. My dog died last year. I had had her ever since I was really little.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

I had a cat, when I was growing up, with whom I was inseparable (except when they sent me off to school). Got the cat when I was 7 and it was born on our back porch. It died when it was 16. I am now in my fifties and I still remember and miss that cat. I have another feline friend now, who has just turned 19. I do realize that my time with him is limited, but I'll remember him after he leaves me, as well. It's good that you didn't let her suffer. Putting a pet down is always hard - they are family. I was devastated when I had to have my little friend handed back to me in a box like that. But sometimes it's the kinder thing. Hard on us, but better for them.

Perhaps, in time, you will visit an animal shelter and find someone else who needs a good home, and bring them home to live with you. They won't replace Esmeralda - they can never do that. But they might find a place in your life.

Thank you Delirium and Nan and I'm sorry to hear about your losses too.

I didn't put her down right when we found out (because I hadn't seen her in over three months, due to the fact I was at college and I wanted to spend as much time as possible with her), although my parents kept telling me to put her out of her misery. But it got to the point where it hurt so much to see her like that.

I will get another cat (but not right now or for a few more years) and I even picked out the name already; Hello, after the Evanescence song. I listened a lot to that song after I learned Esmeralda had cancer and after we had her euthanized.

Aww, I'm sorry for your loss. It's good that you're doing something to commemorate her, I think that helps. I lost my cat last year when he was just 11 months old, so I know how hard it can be. Some people may not understand, but pets are friends.

I had to put one of my ferrets down on tuesday, she had lymphoma which is cancer, it was diagnosed in may, so we had a little time to spoil her rotten. It hard to lose a pet you love.

So sorry to hear about your cat, Batman.
It is hard to lose a pet, they are like part of the family aren't they? I've had to have two cats put to sleep over the years and it is very upsetting. But I think it helps to remember times you had fun together. I agree with what pineapple said, pets are friends.
