|
|
Many times I'll find myself half in my chair, leaning at odd angles, my body turned sideways from what I'm doing, twisted around, etc. And I know I've been sitting that way for awhile because my body hurts. It seems that much of the time my brain is doing stuff, and my body is secondary and I have a hard time slowing down to accommodate it. I don't even notice it until someone says something, or my body hurts.
Anyone else do anything like this? |

I find it very comforting to sit or stand in very odd positions. For instance when I'm at home chopping vegetables for dinner or doing dishes or even at work weighing out chemicals, I stand on my left leg with my right foot touching my left knee (like a stork). I've done this since I was a child. Another thing I find comforting is to sit on the floor or the bed with my legs folded into a pretzel shape.....sort of like inside out-Indian style.....people look at me and say that can't be comfortable.....but it is somehow. Right now I'm sitting on my left foot, and my left leg is folded under my bottom.....I can't just sit normally in my desk chair......
When I drive I usually have my left leg bent and the foot on the seat instead of the floor.....this began when I got a car with an automatic transmission and found my left foot to be useless.....so it's more comfortable to put my foot on the seat.
Most of my odd positions involve extension of my hip flexors, extensors and groin muscles.....this to me feels comfortable. I'll change position only if one of me feet goes numb, or I get a cramp.... |

I used to lean while sitting all the time in my childhood/teens but don't really do it now. Teachers were always giving me a hard time for it. Now I slouch or sit hunched over what I'm doing. I could physically sit up straight if I wanted but find I feel 'restricted' if i do this and can only mantain this kind of posture for a very short while. _________________ "Oh Well, Whatever, Nevermind . . ." - Kurt Cobain |

Threadjacking to talk about cats for a minute.
Mine likes to lay on her back with her paws sticking up in the air. Totally not catlike.

| Yes, I do this all the time. I also rarely sit with my feet on the floor I usually curl my legs up in my chair. I also sit on the far edge or corner of a chair. I think part of it is stress....I bunch up and squeeze my shoulders and hold my head in odd positions...but I think some of it is just what is comfortable for me. I think curling up is my way to sort of "protect" myself. People have been asking me why I sit the way I do all my life or asking me "isnt that uncomfortable?". |

Rarely ever sit "normally" no matter what kind of a chair/sofa I am sitting on. _________________ You can't change your genes, but you can learn to wear them better!

| Agree! Normal sitting is uncomfortable. I sit in unconventional positions all the time. And sometimes I realize it hurts, or need some time when I want to stand up. |

What's the definition of "sit" ?
Sometimes I sit side on to my computer, sometimes I sit over my leg, sometimes I sit regularly and hunch forwards |

I usually curl my legs up...I have thought it was because I am short enough that my feet usually don't touch the ground...um...but it seems like a more centered way of sitting than letting my feet dangle.
I sit "indian style" on chairs at resturaunts, and just about anywhere else.
Approximately one minute before leaving my job as a montessori assistant, I was being yelled at by my boss...who had initally had me sit down so she could yell at me for being late...for sitting indian style.... _________________ Winged Gnome Goddess prevent me from killing this thread

| It's so funny to read this stuff and realize how 'at home' I am here on wrongplanet. Yes, I sit in many odd positions, like on my hands, or I feel comfort when I sit and press my left cheek (face cheek, that is) against my left collarbone. Or I sit with my legs crossed or have on leg high up on a chair when I should have my feet on the ground. |
