Something I noticed a long time ago is that I always hold a pen or pencil near the bottom, like right on the curve part. And I've been commented in Elementary school on how tightly I grip a pencil. At times I try to hold it a little further up, but then I am forced to write at more of an angle and that is awkward to me.

sometimes my hand slips onto the curve. sometimes even onto the nib/tip. but often at the end of the pencil. near the curve

I tend to do that too! My grip is so tight that I have a callus on my finger from all the years of pressure. Also, I prefer pencils to pens (easier to correct my mistakes that way).

As I recall, I did that ALSO! People actually FORCED me to change my grip about the time I was 12.

I did the same thing. I've actually broken the tip off a pencil or two.

I use pens now. But only certain ones, they are fatter than pencils, so I seem to grip them higher. And I don't usually write anything of import, so it doesn't matter if there are scribbles all over.

Always hold near the tip. Pens with a rubber "holder" are useless to me. I loved the pencils that when you sharpen them are all smooth at the tip (made from shavings or not real wood... *shrug*) because it doesn't hurt as much to use them.

WOW! You just reminded me! I did the SAME, and I STILL remember the tip going against my finger, so I DID hold it like that!

Near the point. I've gripped it so tight that over the years a little nub has formed on my fingers to compensate.

I had that same problem too. I can hold it farther up now, but only thanks to physical therapy for my motor skills. Same thing with a fork, except for the fact that I still slip up there at some points. Especially in the latter case, I don't understand why people have such a problem. :\ As long as I can control whatever implement I'm using, how should it matter to them how far down I hold it? People pay attention to the strangest things.

I've never really noticed how other people hold pens, so I have no idea how my grip compares to that of an average person.

I do know that I have a tendency to press down very hard when I write.

Yeah, I hold the pen down really low and it feels good to feel the point on the paper. I used to write so small so nobody knew what I was writing and I found that if I held it down low then I could write really small, so small that it would be within the blue line of the notebook paper. Yep thats how I hold it too. Its so very very hard to teach my children how to hold their pencil when it feels so WRONG to hold it "correctly." Confused

I can hold a pen everywhere. Never had a problem with that.

Gripping a pen far down is indicating difficulty with motor skills and that kind of thing.

When I was in primary school, they made me use these sort of silicone/rubber triangles they slid over the pencil.

They were supposed to correct your grip I think.
