I'm sure this has come up before, but what music helps you calm down when you feel like you're about to or are freaking out, and what makes it so you want to destroy something?
My music that calms me down is:
Sigur Ros: Hoppipolla
Rahxephon Soundtrack: The Door of Adolescence
Samuel Barber: Adagio for Strings
Snow Patrol: Run
Beirut: Mount Wroclai
Gary Jules: Mad World remake
Incubus: Dig
Mozart's Requiem
Johannas Bach: Jesus Bleibet Meine Freude
Beethoven's 5th
Tchaikovsky: Overture 1812
Music that enrages me:
Ozzy Osbourne (it isn't the music, it's his voice): One of his songs resulted in me stabbing my stereo with a pocket knife.
Maroon 5: This stuff resulted in a remote being thrown at my TV, I intentionally missed so I wouldn't break my TV, but put a hole through my closet door. |

| Eric Johnson can calm me down, although I seldom try. If I'm riled I seldom choose music at all. Unless I've been riled by having to listen to shitty music, which is stuck in my head and needs to be expunged, in which case the remedy is Slayer, Ministry, or something else heavy that will pummel the other garbage out of my head. Shitty music that makes me riled includes oldies, country, stupid cliched melodies (happy birthday, ice cream trucks, multi-pitch church bells). |

It hit battery-end first, and the closet door's borderline cardboard (just has a thin layer of imitation oak on top). Looked kind of cool, since it stuck in the door. |

Nothing like some dance music to relax with.
Classical music is very irritating... Even more so when on hold |

| Music doesn't enrage me. If it sucks I just find it annoying. I find aggressive music just helps me get the anger out. |

Agree with JohnHopkins. The more agressive music can be great to let your frustrations out. When you feel like the world is crashing down, angry music where you recognise that anger in the lyrics can be a superb outlet. Metal for example can be very good for those purposes.
It basically all depends on my mood really. I just want lyrics that make me think, that I recognise myself in. That can vary from deeply intellectual stuff to more emo related stuff (there's been moments even "Monsoon" from Tokio Hotel has lifted up my mood )
Generally, music that calms me would be things like
- Heather Nova
- A Perfect Circle (especially the more ethereal ones like Orestes or Brena)
- some tracks by Dido (especially Isobel but to lesser extent also Slide) ...
- And yes, Run by Snow Patrol is excellent
- some tracks by The Cranberries (such as Linger)
- Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode
- Charlotte Sometimes or Lovesong (The Cure)
- some stuff by Enya (eg Orinico Flow, Only If, ...)
- even a few Tool songs, especially Wings For Marie
- My Immortal (Evanescence)
But I find it hard to think of others, I basically don't need calm music, I just want the music to have content that I can relate to. In that way, some more agressive music can calm my mood better than a sweet ballad.
Songs such as Stinkfist (Tool), The Hollow (A Perfect Circle), Limelight (Rush), Slave to the Wage (Placebo), several Orphaned Land tracks, Hysteria (Muse) ... all rather up-tempo or even heavy songs that can lift up my moral in no time.
Music enraging?? Even the music I consider annoying (Britney, Snoop Dogg, Beyonce, ... well, most RnB and hiphop really) is not enraging me, if I don't like it I would rather turn off the TV than to throw stuff at it.
Maroon5 enraging? I would rather say arrousing, check the directors cut of the "This Love" video man _________________ You did it again, yes, you in the mirror

| Either really heavy music or really sad music can calm me down. It depends on how upset I am. If I'm just a little upset I'll play Tori Amos or Coldplay or something like that that's kind of chill just to wind me down. If I'm just sad I'll listen to something like Evanescence or Damien Rice. If I'm to the point where I feel like severely beating someone with a cinder block, I'll listen to something like Otep, Korn, or Flyleaf. You can really tell my mood by the kind of music I'm listening to at the moment. |

Michael W Smith isn't bad, especially his Live The Life album. Not all songs are explicitly christian, some tracks are only lightly religious.
I am atheist myself but I can enjoy some religious music (both Christian and Islamic music). I may not agree with the lyrics praising a god I don't believe in, however I can enjoy the musical output. It would be a bit narrowminded to not listen to the music simply because I don't share the religious believes of the singer.
Just like I like Islamic architecture and Islamic arts in general, I like a lot of Islamic music. Both the more authentic Islamic worship music and the more contemporary rock-esque versions. Pentagram for example have some excellent tracks in which Allah is praised, you could easily call this "Muslim metal".
When it comes to Christian music I only know Michael W Smith and Petra a bit. Both not bad neither. _________________ You did it again, yes, you in the mirror

Hiphop, rap or anything resembling either REALLY annoy me. I hate Mcfly because they are so wet. On the other hand, classical, early to late 90's music and some Japanese music really relaxes me. I love it. If I hear music with WAY too much bass, I go absolutely nuts, even if it is one of my favourite tunes (on a different type of speaker). _________________ I am a Tourettey, Aspie obsessive compulsive! |

This thread is a good idea. Examples
Relaxing music
- Debussy - The Girl With Flaxen Hair
- J.S. Bach - Sheep May Safely Graze
- The Knife - Heartbeats
- Summoning - Rhûn
- Ulver - Blinded by Blood
- Vangelis - Heaven & Hell, Pt. 1
- VNV Nation - Further
Invigorating music
- Asphyxia - Obliterate My Fate
- Cannibal Corpse - Frantic Disembowelment
- Helloween - Twilight of the Gods (more than a little relevant to my career choice)
- Rimsky-Korsakov - Russian Easter Festival Overture
- Sabaton - Metal Machine
- Suicide Commando - Hate Me
- Wagner - Siegfried Funeral March
I'm not sure where Purcell's Funeral Music for the Death of Queen Mary would go; it depends on the passage. _________________ "You can take me, but you cannot take my bunghole! For I have no bunghole! I am the Great Cornholio!" |
