so, my suspected aspie went off to his first day of middle school today (6th grade). my dx'd aspie continues another year of homeschooling (9th grade).
first days make me sad.

Dear Mom, I am also sending the kids off for their first day, one at the junior high, and my autistic daughter at the senior high... I hope the kids on the bus behave themselves and are nice to them.  went to bed close to 1:00 am and got up at 5:00 to start the morning. The bus picked them up @ 6:31 am, just before the sun rose....... Hope your day and your child's is a good one  Take care! |

I SO agree with you -- the first day of school is awful. I always have this big knot in my stomach -- and that lasts for more than a day, it's more like the first week. My son is in the middle of middle school. Every year you just kind of pray that everything goes alright.
So, Kiera and rushfanatic, I really hope your kids do GREAT this year! |

I remember being the autie on the first day of school. I usually ended up being the class hit cause I'd go online and memorize the layout of the school so I knew where EVERY class was. Was able to show pretty much every n00b to their rooms.
It wasn't as bad for me as it was for mum sending me, I had a lot of fun, cause not that many people know each other, or know where to go to hang out, so for once I wasn't the only kid there with no friends. It was a level playing field for that first week.
I'm sure the little ones will be fine. *hugs all the worried mums*

thanks all for the words of encouragement.
my lovely job wouldnt let me take a vacation day, so i wont be home when my youngest gets off the bus. i'm worried about the bus. i'm worried about the classrooms full of spiteful NT middle school kids.
my oldest told me to "stop being such a mom, mom!"
heh. i think i was more anxious than he was this morning. i got 2 hours of sleep.
i sooooo over think everything.

I get an ulcer every year at the beginning of the school year. It bother me that much!

| First day of school, especially for a new school, is always rough. I remember in my first day of middle school, my schedule confused me, and I didn't know where to go, so I just sat down in a corner in the hallways for the rest of the day. Luckily I found my classes the next day... oh, what a disaster that was. Just make sure your kid is prepared... I wasn't. |

| Im gonna be a junior when school starts. I got my driver's license 5 months ago, meaning i can drive to school this year. Im actually excited for school to start cuz i can see my friends cuz i wont get to spend much time with them cuz i work at target and am gonna take a few AP classes. I can also go off campus for lunch when school starts cuz juniors and seniors can. I see how you feel about the bus, the kids on it didnt treat me well so thats why i drive to school now, so if you are worried about the bus just buy your kid a car once he or she gets a license so he or she can drive to school. |

Lol, I do think we worry more than our kids do. Well, for those of us with kids who have overall decent experiences at school.
My son couldn't wait to get to school today, his second day. 6th grade, first year of Middle School. Me ... I know too much about how it can get in Middle School. It may never be that way, but we know it can be ...
What amazed me was that he dealt so well with a mid-day schedule change. I guess because it was better for him. He was happy with the old schedule; happier with the new. There was a 2 hour orientation on Monday where he was shown all his classrooms, introduced to teachers, and practiced his locker (which sticks - that practice was needed!). This school has a freaky bell schedule, it's different almost everyday of the week, but I had taken a copy of the bell schedule and written all his classrooms on it, and he loves that.
We're still in limbo about accomodations for his writing and all that, but I emailed a teacher last night and she seemed receptive to at least talking, so that is good.
Mostly, I think it gets to me every year how my kids are growing up. It's exciting for them. Less so for me.

Well, this was the first year in eight years that I haven't literally felt sick to my stomach all day long, waiting for my son to come (and also waiting for the phone to ring, with the school calling about some problem).
Yes, I was a little nervous when he was due to come home, but hey -- he had a better day than his 17-year-old, popular sister! Yay! (and watch, just now that he has friends and good times at school, my husband will find an out of state job and we'll have to move again!) |

In that situation, I would be, too.
Take the time to meet the teachers and get involved in the PTA. Those things will help you feel more control over the situation. Well, they do for me, anyway.

Twisted stomach -- yep, me too!
My son (9 years old, 4th grade) had 5 mini-meltdowns at school on the first day.
Today was his second day. I was worse, but not sure about him. LOL!
This is the first year with changing classrooms, different schedules, and no locker so he has to carry his stuff around all the time. He has been SOO tired when he gets home. Massive sensory overload.
And I the school has already corresponded 35 emails to me - just about my son. ugh!!! Gimme a break!
