I signed up for a 24 month iPone contract... and I kinda regret it.
Bloody thing; what good is a smart phone without a text editor!? When I heard it had, supposedly, a shrunken-down OSX in it, when it was described as a smart phone, I thought I could actually use it like one! It's a glorified MP3 player with an internet connection!

there are plenty of text editors in the app store and it comes with a notepad preinstalled.

Sadly, Ive yet to find one that can export .txt, unless it's hiding in a corner of the app store somewhere.

Does the iPhone have MMS (basically text messaging with attachments)? Why do people have to activate the phone through iTunes? Those two things along with unprotected WMA support and mediocre sound and video quality are making me decide between a Blackjack II or Pantech Duo.

Mediocre sound and video quality? Huh? I know there's a lot of annoyances with the iPhone/iPod Touch, but poor sound and video quality isn't one of them. The sound quality is above that of the current iPod lineup, with the exception of a hiss that is noticeable only at low volumes. The video quality is excellent, you can playback high bitrate h.264 encoded files on its bright and high contrast screen. The only bad point about video on the iPhone/iPod Touch is the limited codec support. As for WMA support, what did you expect? I don't see the Zune supporting formats like Apple Lossless, do you?

As far as text editing goes at present, the big issue for now would be not that there isn't a native text editor, but if there was one, no matter how full featured it wouldn't be very usable, due to the iPhone/iPod Touch's lag and bugginess on the 2.0 firmware. As Alex says though, if you do need a text editor I'm sure there is one in the App Store, if you dig through all the garbage on there.

I've been using an unlocked iPhone with T-Mobile for a while now, it's been great honestly.

Nah... My carrier is crap; they kept me waiting for three weeks for the iPhone, they were supposed to call me to say it was in - they did call, but they called the iphone in the store!
What's the point of a 3g phone when more than half the time I don't have 3g access! Damn you optus!
The sound and video quality are excellent. But the damn thing has no useful applications, frequent crashes and massive lag! I'm disappointed! I wanted a PDA smartphone, not a youth-culture toy. But, you can't get proper PDA's in Adelaide anymore... You can in Melbourne, but because they are no longer popular in Adelaide only a few specialty stores carry some offline models, and smartphone plans are pretty limited here...
Damn, that's annoying! I think I'll have to hack it and program my own text editor.
I miss my old Windows Mobile PDA! Damn you hip, new Adelaide! You and your... Wine and art museums! I wanna move back to NT...

In regards to stability and lag, these are issues that cropped up with the version 2.0 firmware. On the version 1 firmware the only crashes I had were in Safari. Unfortunately having a 3G iPhone, you won't be able to downgrade. However, you may be relieved to hear Apple are working on patches at present to fix the bugs present and as for 3G issues, the 2.0.2 update should fix that once more people install the update.

For text editing. Again, you really need to go to the App Store. If you go to the App Store you will find hundreds of programs. A quick google search for me brings up the MagicPad application. Start there.

It sounds like you should've researched the product a bit more before laying down your cash. Apple has never made the iPhone out to be a PDA business oriented device like the Blackberry, it has always been for the mainstream consumer, much like all of Apple's other products.
